While global and local contexts differ, one thing stands out: both reports emphasize that the future of work requires adaptability, intentionality, and a focus on skills over roles. Here are the key takeaways and what HR professionals should be thinking about: Reskilling and Upskilling Are No Longer Optional The WEF report predicts that 85% of employers globally will prioritize workforce reskilling by 2030, with nearly 40% of existing skill sets expected to become outdated. Similarly, Intelpoint’s report highlights skill gaps in Nigeria as a significant barrier to workplace success. For HR professionals, this is a wake-up call to champion learning programs that align organizational needs with employee growth aspirations. The Rise of Hybrid Work Both reports identify hybrid work as a cornerstone of the modern workplace. "People don't leave jobs; they leave systems and line managers." This is one of the statements that lives rent-free in my head after the recently concluded HR Focus conference, which was organized by @HR Focus Africa. Practicing HR is truly a humbling experience, and hearing senior professionals in the field confirm this while sharing their experiences with us is an exciting journey, if you ask me. On October 10th, I had the privilege of attending the HR Focus conference at the Accra International Conference Centre. The discussions were inspiring, and the insights were transformative, especially as we navigate the evolving world of work. Here are a few key takeaways that resonated with me: 1.Technology & AI in HR: HR strategy is being reshaped by digital tools and AI, allowing us to make data-driven decisions and use predictive analytics for better foresight. 2.Inclusive & Diverse Approaches: Ensuring both emotional and physical safety for employees is critical. Fostering inclusivity helps create environments where everyone thrives. 3.Employee Experience Matters: Work-life balance, mental health, engagement, and career development are now key pillars of HR strategy. 4.HR Leadership: As HR professionals, we are the leaders of change, innovation, and growth. We must have the strength to make tough decisions while also creating safe, supportive environments. 5.Hybrid Work is Here to Stay: Encouraging hybrid work models allows us to measure outcomes by work quality rather than time spent. It also enables employees to adapt to new ways of working. 6.Data-Driven Actions: Surveys and employee engagement initiatives should lead to actionable results. It’s vital to implement the findings with the right support to drive positive change. 7.Self-Care for HR Professionals: As they say, "Who watches the watchman?" We often forget that HR professionals are employees too. Setting boundaries and prioritizing our well-being is just as important. This event reinforced the idea that the success of any organization lies in creating environments that empower employees to innovate and grow. Workforce diversity and inclusion will also play a critical role in the future of HR in Ghana. As economies continue to grow, the workforce is becoming increasingly diverse in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, and educational background. I believe we must develop strategies to foster an inclusive workplace where all employees feel valued and have equal opportunities for growth and development. This includes implementing training programs on unconscious bias, creating mentorship opportunities, and ensuring that company policies reflect a commitment to diversity and inclusion. Human resources in Ghana will be shaped by the need to address the skills gap. As industries evolve and new technologies emerge, there is a growing demand for employees with specialized skills. HR departments must focus on upskilling and reskilling their workforce to ensure that they can meet the demands of the future job market. By addressing the skills gap, they can help businesses in Ghana remain competitive in the global market while also contributing to the continent’s economic development.
