The share of the often frail and vulnerable to disease elderly population is growing worldwide as life expectancy increases. The expanded program of #Immunization has made the single greatest contribution to improved infant survival over the past 50 years. According to The Lancet, substantial gains in childhood survival have occurred in every global region since 1974, and the EPI has been the driving force behind these improvements. Equitable universal access to immunization remains crucial to sustain health gains and continue to save future lives from preventable infectious mortality. Today, on the last day of World Immunization Week, we're taking a look at Enterovirus D68. While EV-D68 often appears as a mild or severe respiratory illness, it can in some cases result in the far more dangerous acute flaccid myelitis. When the nervous system gets affected, muscles and reflexes weaken which might ultimately lead to respiratory failure, or other severe neurologic complications. The last decade AFM cases, especially in young children, have been on the rise. A vaccine is therefore urgently needed. At Intravacc we are leveraging our well-established Vero cell platform (Cell-vacc) to develop an inactivated EV-D68 vaccine candidate called Avacc 5. The findings reveal that stronger feelings of community trust and connection are associated with higher vaccination intent, highlighting the role of social environments in shaping health behaviors. What is the best way to prevent the spread of conflicting and misleading information about vaccines online? Murdoch Children's Research Institute's (MCRI) Centre for Health Analytics is examining how AI-based social media ‘bots’ can influence public opinion on vaccination and how to effectively target the most widespread misinformation. The team, represented by Dr Muhammad Javed and Gerardo Luis Dimaguila FAIDH, recently received a GSK Immunisation Award at the Communicable Disease & Immunisation Conference. The award prize will help them to further their research by recruiting a panel of experts and fact-checkers to build on their existing model.
