For Nako Timepieces, the new-product-development (NPD) partnership with Okavango Diamond Company presents infinite opportunities for entrepreneurial growth and commercial success — particularly in the watchmaking and jewellery design sectors. It offers immense opportunities to create innovation networks and business ecologies, and to develop Botswana's product and service industries — in effort to enhance her diamond💎value chain. All this is conducted and performed by young citizens. In essence, our approach via design innovation is to highlight that to develop Botswana's🇧🇼diamond💎value chain and to increase her global competitiveness, design innovation stands as an alternative strategy. Similarly, and at national levels — many governments are focusing on strengthening their efforts to harness local design capabilities — for example, the European Union🇪🇺launched a design innovation policy in 2010 with funding for projects that raise the performance of SMEs and most European Union🇪🇺member states now have their bespoke policies and businesses support programmes in design. In addition, the Danish Department of Construction and Enterprise🇩🇰published its Design Vision 2020 with a very strong emphasis on challenge-led innovation and public services and the Korean🇰🇷 government credits the success of its manufacturing industry, including global players Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics to investment in design (Design Council, 2024). In 2009, China🇨🇳announced a strategy to shift from ‘Made in China’ to ‘Designed in China’🇨🇳as part of its plan to reduce dependency on low-value manufacturing and develop original products and brands, and this led to the establishment of 27 design zones with incubators, prototyping and research capabilities (Design Council, 2024). It was a pleasure and privilege to be a country delegate — representing Botswana🇧🇼and to make a panel of distinguished global design and innovation leaders, at the just-ended De Beers Group ‘#DesignInnovation’ Promotion programme. The key objective of this programme is to drive the global ‘design development’ agenda: to increase awareness and to promote the adoption of design innovation as a competitive strategy at national government levels. In essence, design by its nature plays a vital role in linking creativity to innovation (Sir #isaaccox: The Cox Review of Creativity in Business, 2005); In new product development (#NPD), design is the development and introduction of new #approaches, #newwaysofthinking, new #products, #services and #processes (Gisele Raulik Murphy, 2024; Beatrice Villari, 2014; Stefano Maffei, 2014; Anna Whicher, 2014; McKinsey Design, 2024). As such, this programme entails applying strategic design to facilitate manufacturing: the development of consumer products and services: luxury goods — jewellery and watches, and the development, establishment and communications of jewellery brands and luxury retail enterprises. The programme further aims to leverage design innovation for value addition to natural diamonds💎, by stimulating the adoption of design within the De Beers Group producer countries: Botswana🇧🇼, Canada 🇨🇦, South Africa 🇿🇦, and Namibia🇳🇦 — and to make design more accessible to SMEs who may not have internal design capabilities. All to enhance industrial development and drive global competitiveness within the De Beers Group producer countries — through transforming each nation’s design capacities.
