The first step of the sustainability journey is to assess the current state, but how? At Metabolic, we use Material Flow Analysis (MFA), which tracks the ingoing and outgoing materials, energy, water, and waste of a system. We then translate the insights from the MFA into impact hotspots and support our clients in creating targeted intervention strategies. Here’s an example: MFA of the Taiwanese textiles sector. In collaboration with Taiwan Textiles Research Institute, we conducted an extensive analysis of Taiwan's textile material flows and proposed a comprehensive roadmap and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track the progress of the Taiwanese textiles sector transition towards circularity. Ingredients v Intensity - are we getting distracted obsessing with 'which fibre?' instead of focussing on balancing the actual product systems we are working in? We celebrated the rich local capability & collaboration for #sustainabletextiles here in Australia, at Deakin University Sustainable Fibres Symposium last month. There is a lot of obsession about ingredients in #Textiles and #Fashion, we really must take a good hard look at what we do with them too. So many of our challenges become much more manageable if we start dealing with volume & waste. Nothing needs inventing, we can all do more from today, we can invest in the solutions available now, to start reducing our footprint. We must do what we can while we figure out the rest. We don't need to wait. There is no magic bullet, getting to a system in balance is going to be as varied and interesting as the products, people and supply chains in our linear system, how do we support & recognise place based success & build on it? This presentation was delivered at the #nationalwoolmuseum in #geelong. A great place to celebrate the role #Australian #naturalfibres can have at the heart of textile circularity. A colleague recorded my presentation. It's informal. 'Real Reel'as champion of #circularity Yas Grigaliunas would call it. Many ask for slides from presentations, I am sharing this instead, as slides are better in context. This symposium was free to attend, the SMEs there gave time and travel at our own expense, sharing knowledge to create change. So many champions in this sector are small passionate businesses, walking the walk, that can't afford to get to the myriad of sustainability & circularity conferences both locally & globally.
