PFAS in Biocidal Products During the recent 105th CA meeting, the proposal to restrict PFAS substances under REACH was discussed (CA-Sept24-Doc.7.3): https://lnkd.in/e2kM-Jm8. 1. Definition: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are fluorinated substances containing at least one fully fluorinated methyl or methylene carbon atom (without any H/Cl/Br/I atom attached). They are widely used in industrial processes and consumer products, including biocidal products. 2. Concerns: PFASs are persistent, toxic, and have potential for bioaccumulation. 3. Metabolite: Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) is a highly persistent metabolite formed from the breakdown of PFASs. 4. Proposal: A proposal for PFAS restrictions is being examined under REACH. 5. Biocidal Products: 11 active substances used in biocidal products are identified as PFAS. Four are currently not approved, while the rest are under renewal or first approval evaluation, except for fludioxonil. 6. Exclusions: The REACH restriction proposal excludes certain PFAS types expected to fully degrade in the environment, including indoxacarb, triflumuron, and fludioxonil.
