We’ve started to see the impact of technology and AI in bidding. It’s going to play a critical role, although my Bid Excellence Award nomination had no reference to technology. I wanted to show the continued importance of people in the bid process; effective capture, rigorous qualification, running writing training with our SMEs, and being the catalyst and driver of winning deals and overall sales performance. I was delighted to win on the night. 🎉 How does it feel to win the Bid Excellence award? We’re naturally all competitive people in the bid world. Competing and winning against talented peers in the APMP community is highly rewarding. Winning an award helps with raising my internal profile within Virgin Media O2 Business too. I did find out at school parents' evening this week that my seven-year old had been telling the teacher and his class that ‘Daddy had won a trophy at work!' That makes it extra special. 🎉 What pearls of wisdom would you like to share? The nomination should be treated like a bid. Is there a compelling story behind it? What are the key messages to emphasise? Can it meet all the evaluation criteria? Is there evidence (qualitative and quantitative) to support it? What’s behind the International Day for Bids and Proposals on 29th September, how did it come about, and who’s it for? We had the idea for an international day in a team meeting in summer '23 and we looked at each with a collective, “Why not?” We didn’t have a plan beyond registering the day, but we were convinced it'd be a hit. I’m a believer that if something feels right, then it is right. In fact, the response from people was incredible. So many people shared their journeys into bids and proposals and what the profession meant to them. Messages ranged from emojis to videos. My own journey started in 1994 (I think!) when I was at British Rail Telecoms. I helped them win their first ever non-rail bid and I was hooked! This year we wanted to do something more ambitious (and coordinated!) That’s why we reached out to Pippa Birch, Tony Birch, Melissa Mae Brown and Steven Coles, to lay on a free-to-attend networking event. I loved how they all leapt at the chance to get involved and really got behind it. As for the day itself on the 29th? I reckon a reflective run followed by watching football. So, that’s what IDBP24 is about. It’s about celebrating this crazy thing that bid and proposal professionals do. It’s about raising awareness of the contribution we all make.
