APSS 2024 - What an amazing event! Connecting with hundreds of sleep professionals worldwide was truly fantastic. The program and industry exhibitions were packed with valuable insights into the latest technologies and approaches in sleep medicine. Several key takeaways stood out. One major highlight was the shift towards home-based sleep studies. With new consumer technologies like self-application sensors for sleep, respiratory, ECG, and limb movement, patients can easily apply them and collect quality data right from their homes. This shift might even lead to changes in how sleep studies are classified and billed. While traditional sleep studies focus on data collection and scoring, AI and advanced devices are set to revolutionize the field. There is a common fear that AI will replace technologists, but in reality, our roles are evolving. We needs to shift from ensuring data accuracy and scoring to integrating AI and managing patient care in a more holistic manner. Traditional sleep labs will remain essential for patients with comorbidities and those with sleep disorders other than simple OSA cases. With the adoption of AI, we will likely see an increase in diagnoses of sleep disorders that require more attention. It is not about AI replacing us, but about us using AI to enhance our work. Technologists and labs that embrace these technologies will thrive, while those who don't may be left behind. Just my two cents! The conference also gave me a chance to connect with international experts and learn about various fields of sleep medicine. It was great to catch up with old "Binary Sleep" geeks who were our go-to sources of information before social media took over. #AASMFoundation, #AASM, #SLEEP,

Up next, our third poster for the SLEEP 2024 conference, "Multi-center Evaluation of a User Operable EEG Based Automated Sleep Monitor" The Beacon Dreem headband is a novel patient self-applied headband embedded with dry EEG electrodes, capable of providing PSG quality sleep staging using only EEG and accelerometer data as input. This system is designed to meet the need for low-cost EEG-based longitudinal sleep monitoring in the home setting, and achieves this with a subject/patient operable clinical grade EEG measurement device (requiring no sleep lab, gels, or technologist). In a series of prospective studies, Dreem was validated against human expert scored PSG and usability by patients in the home setting. The Dreem system demonstrated high fidelity sleep staging at a fraction of the time and cost of PSG, while allowing for repeat measurements. In eliminating lab visits and technologist setup, Dreem opens the door to longitudinal brain state assessment and raw EEG data acquisition. These data were used to support the FDA 510(k)-clearance for the Dreem system in the evaluation of disturbed night time sleep. Beacon is actively deploying the FDA 510(k)-cleared Dreem sleep headband in clinical trials with our biopharma partners and beyond. Exciting news from the #ESRS conference in Seville, Spain! A multi-center study has demonstrated that Onera Health’s wireless, patch-based Onera Sleep Test System (STS) provides sleep staging data comparable to traditional in-lab polysomnography (PSG). The key findings from the study, which was presented during the 27th Congress of the European Sleep Research Society (ESRS) held from September 24-27, include: High concordance between Onera STS and traditional PSG for total sleep time, NREM, and REM sleep stages. The patch-based Onera STS showed strong performance in detecting N1, N2, and N3 sleep stages. Inter-scorer variability for Onera STS is similar to traditional PSG, indicating reliable scoring. This study, involving 206 participants across seven clinical sites, utilized blind scoring by three independent entities according to AASM criteria. The results highlight that the Onera STS enables accurate PSG studies outside the sleep laboratory, potentially improving access to diagnostic services for patients with sleep disorders. As sleep medicine continues to advance, technologies like the Onera STS may play a crucial role in enabling sleep clinics to implement home-PSG programs and expanding clinical-grade sleep testing to populations in need. Exciting progress...
#SleepEurope2024, Seville, Spain! I had the opportunity today to present two posters on exciting developments in sleep research: 1. A joint work co-authored with Daniel P., my dear friend and colleague, who developed the RSWA quantification algorithm: "Semi-Automatic Quantification of REM Sleep Without Atonia in a Natural Environment." This work not only investigates how different sleep features are affected by an artificial environment, but also automates the process, utilizing automated artifact detection and enabling differentiation between individuals with and without REM Sleep Behavior Disorder. 2. "Sleep Spindle Characteristics in Parkinson's Disease (PD) Patients and Populations at Risk" demonstrates a novel pattern in sleep spindles that significantly differs between healthy controls, PD patients, and—most interestingly—individuals at high risk for developing Parkinson’s disease in the future. Both studies utilized home-based sleep recordings captured with X-trodes wearable system, allowing us to peek into subjects' sleep in a natural environment. I am truly grateful to Prof. Yael Hanein for her mentorship and continuous support, and to Prof. Anat Mirelman for her exceptional leadership and guidance in this research.

💡 PLG as part of EIT Health Consortium supporting innovation Apneal introduces groundbreaking progress in sleep apnea testing with the world’s first technology for diagnostically accurate advanced home testing, using only the patient’s smartphone attached to the chest with an adhesive bandage. By leveraging basic smartphone sensors, APNEAL records the patient’s movements and breathing sounds during sleep. This data is transformed through sophisticated artificial intelligence algorithms into signals equivalent to those obtained from advanced clinical examination (e.g., ventilatory polygraphy), enabling automatic detection of cardiac and respiratory events. Upon completion of the recording, the technology generates an examination report with access to metrics for assessing sleep quality. The results are then communicated to the doctor on an ergonomic dashboard before the patient’s treatment can proceed. Thanks to the EIT Health Flagships program, APNEAL gains financial backing and operational support through a network of key players in the European sleep apnea ecosystem. ProductLife Group is pivotal as the regulatory partner within this consortium, providing expert guidance on regulatory compliance and audit preparation. PLG’s involvement in the consortium deepens our regulatory expertise and contributes to accelerating patient access to innovative health technologies. By bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and regulatory approval, PLG is poised to revolutionize the landscape of home sleep testing, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and advancing healthcare innovation.
