Confession: It took me half a lifetime to stop being scared of talking in public. In school we were taught to talk in public while holding some cards in our hands. I always hated the looks of that. During many of my first conferences, I had a stomach ache that started days before my talk came up in front of hundreds of people. After teaching 10000 hours I am starting to think about rhetorical tools to wean myself off the slides. That’s an incredibly long path. What steps over a lifetime changed from my time in school? # Giving one presentation per week in undergrad caused a habit. Even if it didn’t get rid of my stomach ache. # I saw that even my famous elders were scared. Somehow that released me from being scared to death myself. # I wanted people to learn about the cool things I discovered in my research. So I went from being scared that my content was boring to being excited to share cool new information and hoping for discussions. # Moving away from concentrating on survival toward experimenting with presentation styles. Notice that I said “moving away”. There is always a worry about something: Content, correctness, voice, emotion, ordering, being convincing, appreciating other viewpoints appropriately, saying what you mean, thinking on your feet, having a mental model of the content and presentation structure, choosing and using rhetorical tools (such as the ones below), … I am thinking, this process is never “done”, but the learning path definitely has become enjoyable.
