There are some issues in this story. 1) Taking over $25,000 in student loans to make $13,000 a year is illogical. People need to stop doing that. I'd argue that her game income is a trade skill and it makes her more money than her writing education does. Logically, that means her writing is actually her expensive hobby, not her games. If your education choice leads to an expensive hobby like so many others, stop paying for that education thinking it is anything more. 2) Based on math, they have a household income of $133,000. After an estimated 30% tax (federal, state, misc), they end up with an income of only $7,758 per month. That isn't sustainable with over $8,000 a month in expenses. Dave Ramsey would not be impressed. 3) Everyone knows that the "game master" of Dungeons & Dragons is a Dungeon Master. So DM would be the correct abbreviation, not GM. The DMD site uses the correct language, but this article for some reason uses GM, which is definitely a thing but in other environments. DMing is definitely a critical role in the gameplay of D&D, so I am curious how good/professionally paid DMs are. @MannShorts ( https://lnkd.in/gRGdkEsc )does some hilarious videos of how strangely D&D campaigns can go. 4) She doesn't actually make $37k a year leading D&D games. The headline is wrong. Regardless, I'm actually curious what her "hourly" equivalent rate is hosting games. $375 for 3 hours is a hearty rate, but there's probably a good amount of prep that goes into hosting and some overhead (business administration, advertising, etc) to consider. But also, $37k isn't more than the median income in Utah, and includes secondary employment, so I hope she isn't working 60 hours
People are surprised to learn that 36-year-old Mari Murdock is a professional game master, a role in which she organizes and narrates tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. Since 2021, Murdock’s main source of income has been working for Dungeon Master Direct, a Utah-based company that specializes in online and in-person tabletop roleplaying game sessions that range from $375 to $750. She makes $24,000 as a dungeon master for the company, plus another $13,000 teaching writing at nearby Westminster University in Salt Lake City. Here's how Murdock was able to turn her hobby into a career: https://cnb.cx/4bbRu9i

But also, $37k isn't more than the median income in Utah, and includes secondary employment, so I hope she isn't working 60 hours a week to hit that. I do like the idea of game-based careers. I am a huge fan of gamification too. There is probably a lot of happiness to be had there, when financially viable and sustainable. I have a couple of old friends who have opened game-based shops (one game store, one game based brewery) and they are still functioning over a decade late, so it can be done. Cheers to them! I just don't like how people pitch things poorly or incompletely. This was written by a hooman.
