How many continents are there? It depends on where you grew up. Not everyone divides the Americas into North and South. And not everyone divides Eurasia into Europe and Asia. How many continents you believe exist depends on which country you went to school in. I learned this the hard way back when I was leading research at a market research firm. We carried out studies on a global scale. I made an assumption, mistakenly noting in one of our surveys that there were seven continents, as if it were a "fact," when I later learned that simply isn't so. There are multiple ways of grouping large land masses for purposes of teaching kids about how to view the world. The one you happen to know depends on local education standards where you went to school, and ultimately is a government decision. The reason I share this is that *where you are from* in the world, as well as where you currently live and have lived, can impact your beliefs, thoughts and behaviors in pretty major ways. The question of how many continents there are seems so basic and core to how we view the world as humans, but really isn't after all. How many continents did you learn about growing up? And what were they called? Feel free to share your answer in the comments, as the map I'm sharing here is not definitive or all-encompassing. 🌏 PS: Join people all around the world and subscribe to my FREE weekly newsletter, MAKING GLOBAL WORK. Is going to university necessary in order to be successful in business? Here at Beyond, we’ve been out asking people in New Zealand how they find the work culture here. We recently interviewed three young friends in the Auckland CBD, and they shared that they wished there wasn’t so much pressure to attend university in New Zealand. This got us curious to find out “how many of the world’s billionaires attended university?” It turns out, according to a billionaire census by Wealth-X in 2015, around 30% of the world’s billionaires do not have a bachelor’s degree. Knowing this begs the question, do you need to attend university in order to be successful in business? It seems like the answer is no. Some people are better suited to directly entering the workforce and learning on the job. It’s important to remember in business that each and every person is different. Some people learn through teaching, while others learn by doing. Everyone has the potential for massive success, but you have to take your own unique path to get there.

“It’s time for young talent to step in.” In a small country like Latvia, where the birth rate is declining and many talents are drawn abroad, relying solely on experienced local professionals is no longer enough. There aren’t enough of them, and hiring them often costs more than businesses can afford. Plus, markets are evolving rapidly, and even experienced specialists face challenges adapting. Therefore, you have to be creative to keep organization growing sustainably. One of the options is bringing the young talent and educating them. You get a lot of benefits if you do it professionally. They’re: ✔ Motivation: Young professionals are eager to learn and often more driven than their experienced peers. ✔ Flexibility: It’s easier to mold junior staff than retrain seasoned ones. ✔ Cost efficiency: A strong training system can make onboarding young talent more affordable. By doing this, we not only strengthen our organizations but also help keep local talent from leaving the country. Universities like Rīgas Tehniskā universitāte (Riga Technical University), Latvijas Universitate, and Rīgas Ekonomikas augstskola - Stockholm School of Economics in Riga are just a few sources of talent, and there are many more. Let’s work with them and invest in the future.
