Last week, Apprenticeships Mentor Naomi Pedersen attended the Department of Trade, Business and Asian Relations (DTBAR) luncheon in Katherine with the department's Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Hayley Richards. The roundtable provided an opportunity to raise awareness of the department's purpose and focus, discuss key initiatives, their implementation, and progress, as well as foster two-way engagement on business and industry challenges and opportunities. The Hon. Robyn Cahill OAM MLA, Minister for Trade, Business and Asian Relations, was also in attendance. Naomi also caught up with Sandy Talbot, Workforce Development Officer for DTBAR, and with Miyah McCoy, a school-based trainee who recently commenced her Certificate III in Business, employed with NTG - DTBAR. The sixth panel session in the 15th FICCI Global Skills Summit on the theme “Apprenticeships & Internships: Transforming India’s talent” suggested prioritizing apprenticeship models to enhance its talent pool and shift from direct employment to industry-based learning. While the government has introduced various schemes like NAPS and SHREYAS to promote apprenticeships, concerns about labor exploitation and the complexity of multiple schemes must be addressed.
