“Nigerian music industry flourishes worldwide, struggles at home” by Dolapo Amusat & Tomide Marv. (Punch Newspapers, 2024) TL;DR: to maintain the significance of local music industry in the big picture, key players need to zoom out of fighting over the minuscule piece of the pie, and leverage partnerships with tech, finance and government professionals to figure out how to really sustain this movement. Beyond the glitz and glam of Afrobeats, the local industry suffers from a lack of physical and systemic infrastructure, as well as the prevalent macroeconomic hurdles, thus relegating local players to bystanders as Afrobeats becomes the global darling. In this piece, we break down some of these challenges within the context of available data, and propose solutions across three pillars of: financing, technology enablement and policy - all achievable through strategic and operational partnerships. This is a major change in the business of neighbouring rights in France: the country’s two largest neighbouring rights (NR) societies — SCPP, which collects and distributes NR royalties to owners of sound recordings, and Adami, which manages NR on behalf of music and audiovisual performers — have signed an agreement that could lead to the operational merger of the two Paris-based organisations. The agreement was signed by Olivier Nusse on behalf of SCPP and Anne Bouvier for ADAMI. In a first step, the two collective management organisations will create a joint venture which will host the two society’s respective databases and their distribution tools related to the remuneration for private copying and equitable remuneration. Both organisations credit former ADAMI MD Bruno Boutleux for initiating these talks and pushing for a closer cooperation between NR societies. https://lnkd.in/e6vsVmgQ

The global network of rights societies regrouped under the umbrella of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composer (CISAC) have collected a record €13.1 billion in 2023, up 7.6% compared to the previous year, according to CISAC’s Global Collections Report 2024, covering data from 2023.  CISAC said the increase was driven by “continued steady growth in digital income and a strong recovery in live concerts and public performance, which became the last sector to recover fully from the pandemic.” Globally, digital collections grew by +9.6% in 2023, to €4.6bn. Having overtaken TV and radio to become creators’ biggest income stream in 2022, digital moved further ahead in 2023, making up 35% of total collections. This compares to 30% for broadcast (€3.88bn) and 25% for live and public performance (€3.27). https://lnkd.in/eDs8PD-B
