The influential Paris-based International Science Council has called for a ‘big science’ approach to speed up unacceptably sluggish progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. “There is an urgency to act,” it said at the United Nations high-level forum on sustainable development, held in New York last week. The Council proposes that a ‘big science’ approach should be applied widely and locally for rapid effect – especially in the Global South – and should be accompanied by a new funding model that surpasses current national science funding systems, in a new report titled Flipping the Science Model: A roadmap to science missions for sustainability...

How to go #fossilfree as a university? Learn in our webinar tomorrow (17 September, 16:00 - 17:00)! 🌐 Cutting ties with the fossil fuel sector is a multifaceted and complex process. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) made the first transformative step when the executive board announced that will no longer enter into research partnerships with companies in the fossil fuel industry, unless those companies demonstrably commit to the Paris Agreement. With this decision, VU became the first university in the Netherlands and the second university in the world to stop collaborations with the companies of the fossil fuel industry. 🌱In April this year, VU Amsterdam celebrated the signing of the new fossil-free research framework which sets clear criteria that companies in the fossil energy sector must meet in order to demonstrably commit to the #ParisAgreement. This SDG Academy delves into the topic of fossil fuel severance as a university, the development of the VU framework on Fossil Free Research and the journey of VU since the divestment decision. The webinar will feature expert speakers: Aaron Pereira (Solid Sustainability Research), Marjan Hofkes (VU School of Business and Economics), Mathieu Blondeel (IVM Institute for Environmental Studies), and Philipp Pattberg (ASI/IVM). For the opening keynote for the 16th Nordic Environmental Social Sciences Conference, Josie Chambers chose not to focus on the dominant ways people have been co-producing knowledge and action for sustainability. But rather, to take stock of the field and ask: what exactly are we co-producing? Are we producing knowledge that reinforces how the world is? Or are we imagining and prefiguring explorations of how the world can be otherwise? Read Josie Chambers' latest #UtopianPulses blog here: https://lnkd.in/erqP82i7 #UtopianPulses is a monthly blog series in which Josie Chambers shares creative approaches for collectively imagining the world otherwise. From challenging seemingly inevitable unjust futures to facilitating alternative forms of politics, each month, Utopian Pulses invites you into new ways of enabling our collective imagination to flourish. 📷 Sabaheta Ramčilović-Suominen [ID: Photo of Josie giving the opening keynote lecture at the 16th NESS—Nordic Environmental Social Sciences—Conference. Text on the slide: 'To conclude. - How would you imagine yourself doing co-production otherwise? And how might we imagine this together? -What should we be co-producing? Knowledge of how the world is? Or explorations in how we can become (im)possibly togetherwise? -"We must live in this world as citizens of antoher. What is required of us is both specific to our distinctive situation, and the same as for every earlier and later generation: Mourn. Hope. Love. Imagine. Organize." - Ruth Levitas, Utopia as Method, p. 220'] #Utopia #Coproduction #Knowledge #Research #Creativity #NESS2024 #Education Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University

The panel at our Awards Ceremony, 'How can planetary boundary research be shaped and amplified to influence policy and practice, enabling a sustainable future?', focused on exploring how the transformative power of systems-based research in planetary boundary science, which identifies potential pathways for solutions, can be leveraged to influence industry, economics, governance, and policy. Key takeaways from the panel: 👉 Scientists need to become actors outside the scientific community, specifically in the policy space, for their insights to be translated into real-world impact. This requires a two-way communication between scientists and policy makers. 👉 We need to train people in multiple stages of their career on the topic of sustainability so they can participate and learn from the latest scientific developments. 👉 What enables science to impact society is innovation and the innovation we need should be need-based, vision-driven and transformative. 👉 We need to promote the adoption of three core values along the science-innovation chain: caring, sharing, and daring Panelists: Johan Rockstrom, Director, PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Salvatore Aricò , Chief Executive Officer, International Science Council Massamba Thioye, Project Executive of the UN Climate Change Innovation Hub, UNFCCC UN Nicole Schwab, Co-Head, Nature Positive Pillar, World Economic Forum Celine Abecassis-Moedas, Professor and Dean for Executive Education, Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics #EarthSystemScience #PlanetaryBoundaryScience #PlanetaryHealth #SciencePolicy The Villars Institute
