[The Frontiers Planet Prize: Celebrates Breakthroughs in Sustainability Science] Launched in 2022 by the Frontiers Research Foundation, the Frontiers Planet Prize recognizes and awards exceptional scientists conducting transformational research to protect our earth system. Through a rigorous evaluation and voting process, an independent Jury of 100 may select a National Champion for each participating country, and from this cohort of National Champions, and after a second round of voting, 3 International Champions will each be awarded 1 million CHF. The prize focuses on addressing any one of the 9 planetary boundaries, as detailed by Professor Johan Rockström, director at the Potsdam Institute of Climate Change, and Owen Gaffney in their book and documentary, Breaking Boundaries.    The Prize seeks to boost sustainability research globally by fostering national and international competition – much like the Olympics, but among scientists, universities, and countries. The aim is to identify, fund and support research that provides real solutions to the global environmental threats we face.    The prize will recognize the best research published in established scientific journals within the past two years (date of acceptance, 1st November 2022 – 31st October 2024), with robust peer review and transparent publication procedures, that fulfil the criteria of the prize. The CHF 1 million prize will be awarded to each International Champion to advance the breakthrough research of the winning research group. The influential Paris-based International Science Council has called for a ‘big science’ approach to speed up unacceptably sluggish progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. “There is an urgency to act,” it said at the United Nations high-level forum on sustainable development, held in New York last week. The Council proposes that a ‘big science’ approach should be applied widely and locally for rapid effect – especially in the Global South – and should be accompanied by a new funding model that surpasses current national science funding systems, in a new report titled Flipping the Science Model: A roadmap to science missions for sustainability...

Our lecture series continues with Dr. Prajal Pradhan sharing his research "A threefold approach to rescue the 2030 Agenda from failing" and highlighting SDG 2 Zero Hunger, the agriculture and nutrition aspects. 🥣🥗 Although SDGs aim to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path, countries are not yet able to make transformative changes for long-term sustainability that require building social prosperity and foundations within planetary boundaries. Failing to achieve SDGs will negatively affect billions of people and worsen environmental conditions and socio-economic problems. BeyondSDG aims to understand the necessary conditions for long-term sustainability, including achieving SDGs. 💬 About the speaker: Prajal Pradhan, an Assistant Professor at the University of Groningen, studied agricultural engineering and environmental management. He has received the ERC Starting Grant 2022. Prajal was a lead author of the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Land. He has experience designing relevant research on sustainable development, climate change, and food systems. His current research focuses on understanding the necessary conditions for long-term sustainability, including achieving SDGs, urban transformations, and climate resilience. 🚨 Call for Abstracts: 10th Annual NEST Conference 2025 🚨 The Network for Early Career Researchers in Sustainability Transitions (NEST) is delighted to announce the Call for Abstracts for its 10th Annual Conference, hosted by the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex Business School, Brighton, UK, on May 29–30, 2025. This milestone conference reflects on a decade of fostering collaboration among early career researchers and advancing knowledge in sustainability transitions research. Under the theme: “Bridging the Gap Between Research and Reality: A Reflection on 10 Years of NEST,” we invite scholars to explore the alignment between academic research and the pressing challenges of today’s world. How to go #fossilfree as a university? Learn in our webinar tomorrow (17 September, 16:00 - 17:00)! 🌐 Cutting ties with the fossil fuel sector is a multifaceted and complex process. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) made the first transformative step when the executive board announced that will no longer enter into research partnerships with companies in the fossil fuel industry, unless those companies demonstrably commit to the Paris Agreement. With this decision, VU became the first university in the Netherlands and the second university in the world to stop collaborations with the companies of the fossil fuel industry. 🌱In April this year, VU Amsterdam celebrated the signing of the new fossil-free research framework which sets clear criteria that companies in the fossil energy sector must meet in order to demonstrably commit to the #ParisAgreement. This SDG Academy delves into the topic of fossil fuel severance as a university, the development of the VU framework on Fossil Free Research and the journey of VU since the divestment decision. 📣 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐩𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐫: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 We are excited to announce the publication of our latest paper, “𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞,” as part of The British Academy’s discussion paper series that explore “What are the possibilities of a good digital society.” Our research was selected as one of 13 pivotal topics in this series, highlighting the importance of understanding the intricate relationship between #digitalisation and #environmental #sustainability. Our paper focuses on three indirect impacts: 1) efficiency; 2) rebound; and 3) substitution in the context of energy consumption associated with the use of digital innovations in daily life activities. We outline a research agenda that supports Social Science, Humanities, and the Arts research on the environmental implications of digital engagement and conclude with policy recommendations focused on enhancing the positive climate impacts of digitalisation in daily life.
