“In 2022, Japan set out to increase startup investment by a factor of 10 in five years. It’s nowhere near achieving that. Total investment in startups in the country has been falling since that target was set.” https://lnkd.in/d8cRDKHb

Tokyo went from No. 9 in 2021 to No. 10 in 2024 in the Startup Genome Global Startup Ecosystem Report rankings. Startup investment in Japan has historically been lower than in other large economies in part because Japanese startups are generally seen as inward-looking and unwilling to take on the risks of going overseas, since the domestic market is fairly large, making globally competitive Japanese startups few and far between.

What can Singapore teach us about startup ecosystems? 7th place in the world for best startup ecosystems, Singapore has recently climbed the rankings. Based on Startup Genome’s latest 2024 Global Ecosystem Report — comparing 55 countries, 4.5 million startups, and 300 ecosystems. What matters is: ⭐ Startup Performance ⭐ Funding ⭐ Talent & Experience ⭐ Knowledge (patents & research) ⭐ Market Reach (startup global expansion) Key insight: Global ecosystems are like startups — ranking by their ability to mobilize resources (e.g. talent & capital) to pre-trend opportunities 🚀🚀🚀 I’m proud to have lived in Singapore in the last 5 years as part of this growing startup ecosystem with accelerators (Antler), venture builders (Rainmaking), consultancies (MISSION+), VCs, founders that all make this possible. My close friends, moreover, are founders and their life journey’s have been incredible. Flying from San Fransisco Bay, I’ll be in Singapore in August — reach out to connect! #EnterpriseSingapore #Singapore #Startups Curious about the report, you can read more at Startup Genome.

As we continue to nurture and elevate our startup ecosystem, I'm proud to highlight the ASEAN Startup Initiative led by MOSTI and Cradle. This initiative, endorsed by the ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation (COSTI), aims to foster startup ecosystems across the region through economic integration and inclusive development. Key Highlights: 🔹 Official Launching of ASEAN Startup AI Powered Portal: A comprehensive directory and starting point for venture creation and market access across ASEAN Member States. 🔹 Capacity Programs: Including pitching competitions and startup accelerator programs targeting ASEAN-themed and corporate-based challenges. 🔹 Startup Village: Featuring events like the ASEAN-India Startup Festival 2025 to expand the national startup ecosystem to a global network. 🔹 Statement on Empowering ASEAN Tech Startups: Garnering support from all ASEAN Member states to expand the global startup network and strengthen cross-border ties. Our goal is to create a seamless business environment for startups, supporting founders as they scale their ventures to new heights. Support for Singapore's startup ecosystem is gaining momentum 🏃➡️ Great article by my friend Nicolas Lye, summarizing the various grants available in Singapore to drive innovation and growth. It is amazing to see Singapore’s commitment and resolve to support its startup ecosystem, especially in tech. As a testimony of how quickly things move, since Nicolas wrote this article the EDB announced today an additional S$440 million in funding for the Startup SG Equity (SSGE) scheme and increasing the co-investment cap from S$8 million to S$12 million for each deep-tech startup investments. To date over S$3 billion has been invested in over 330 startups under the Startup SG Equity scheme. 🚀 Singapore Startups: Opportunities in Change The startup landscape in Singapore is shifting—but opportunities remain abundant for those who adapt. These are some of the key trends I’m observing: 1️⃣ Late-stage companies are seeing increased attention, with investors focusing on startups with proven traction. 2️⃣ Seed-stage resilience continues as regional players lead the charge in funding early-stage ventures. 3️⃣ Despite global headwinds, Singapore’s positioning as a gateway to Southeast Asia makes it a launchpad for innovation. Adapting to these trends will be critical in 2025. The startup landscape is experiencing an exciting time, and I’m optimistic about the possibilities ahead. What are you most excited about for Singapore startups next year? Share your thoughts below! #Founder #Venturecapital #Fintech #Auptimate #2025Trends #Singapore
