As the discussion about AI in education evolves, a recurring theme is the potential of AI technology to enhance education. The discussion often begins with a focus on how advanced technologies can revolutionize the learning experience and how they are affecting learning. The narrative is similar to the use of any other tech in education and typically goes like this: first, there are discussions about tech innovation. The initial excitement centers around the capabilities of the latest AI tools and platforms. Then, the discussions shift to resources: the analysis of materials and content created and used by AI technologies. Finally, discussions move to pedagogy and teacher training: how to train teachers to integrate these new tools and materials into their classrooms to improve learning. The vision and goals of education are often neglected. In the Four-in-Balance model (by Kennisnet, 2011), this perspective is called the technology-driven approach. While this technology-driven approach has its merits, it often leads to a mismatch between the technology and the actual needs of students, teachers, and the entire educational system, often failing to deliver any transformation and quality improvement in education. As an example, I highly recommend the paper by Lomos and colleagues about the implementation of ICT in classrooms in Luxembourg: https://lnkd.in/e2zX5MkG. I advocate for a different pathway, starting from an educational vision and working towards co-constructing solutions for a holistic integration of AI technology in education that emphasizes addressing the educational challenges of a given community. In this education-driven approach, we first begin with a clear understanding of the educational goals and the vision for student outcomes. What skills, knowledge, and values do we aim to develop? With these goals in mind, we focus on training educators, equipping them with the pedagogical strategies and skills they need to achieve these educational objectives. Then, we develop educational materials and resources that support the trained educators in their mission. These should be designed to enhance the learning experience and align with the educational vision. Finally, we co-create and introduce AI technologies both to give teachers "superpowers" to enhance their practices and to help students thrive. By prioritizing education over AI technology, we ensure that the AI technology created is not just cutting-edge but also genuinely effective in fostering meaningful learning experiences. Thus, the questions we need to ask right now are: 1) What are our goals and vision for education? 2) How can we define the current educational challenges in a way that allows us to design solutions to overcome them? Only by answering these questions will we have the capacity to develop AI technology that actually helps, instead of continuing to try to solve specific educational challenges with generic AI technology. #AIED #AIinEducation

"12. In our schools, we have started to use tools that provide real-time data-driven insights to deliver more personalised educational experiences for our learners. For example, the Short Answer Feedback Assistant in the Singapore Student Learning Space, our national online learning platform, uses Generative AI to provide feedback to students. It was previously only able to provide feedback for close-ended questions. We will soon be able to do the same for open-ended questions as well, from June 2024. How it works is that teachers can input suggested answers or rubric descriptors that are aligned to the national curriculum, or other learning outcomes into the system. This means that our students will receive more targeted feedback, across a wider range of learning experiences. 13. Another example is MathsCheckᴾˡᵘˢ which was introduced by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board to schools in 2023. The MathsCheckᴾˡᵘˢ leverages AI to customise tests based on each student's ability, adjusting test difficulty according to students' performance during the test. It measures students' performance on core knowledge and skills in Primary Mathematics. More importantly, it provides valuable information on their learning gaps, which means that our teachers will have a keener sense of which student may need more help with the topic. The beauty of this is that the data does not just provide feedback to individual learners. As we collect more data, we will also better understand the challenges faced by a class of students, or even a cohort of students and what better ways we can teach them concepts from different approaches. This will strengthen our pedagogical practices. ... 17. Let me be clear: these tools will not replace our teachers. Their professional judgement has to be the first and last mile to bridge what technology provides us and what our students need. 18. 𝘐𝘯 𝘧𝘢𝘤𝘵, 𝘢𝘴 𝘸𝘦 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘺 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘪𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘣𝘺 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴𝘦, 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘶𝘴𝘦. This is the new craft that all our teachers must master as part of their professional development. 19. We already have preliminary experiences that tells us that we cannot apply EdTech uniformly across all teaching contexts. For instance, with high-ability students, having high tech can be a tremendous advantage because it helps to stretch them. But for high-need students, we must start with high touch, to settle the socio-emotional foundations, before we apply the appropriate technology for them." Zoubiya 💡 Ahmed, interesting post. It's clear the balance the #UAE is endeavoring to achieve is beginning to work. I am at the release of the global #TIMSS results and the UAE was one of only three countries to improve in both #Science and #Math. Students need both #rigor and #support. Students who report liking these subjects radically out perform those who do not. Not surprisingly, students with high levels of absenteeism are greatly underperforming. Equally, the #PISA #LearningSkills study recently released indicated that students need to feel that they can ask questions and get help to perform well. We need to make schools welcoming environments where students are challenged at the right level with engaging content. #IEA #TIMSS #InternationalAssessment Dr Dirk Hastedt Matthias von Davier Boston College Lynch School

Imagine you're the leader of a country & you want two things: 👩💻 You want your youngest residents to have a wholesome start in life [be well, care, play, explore, innovate, collaborate, create and make, be full of buzz and beans]. 👨💻 You ALSO want to objectively see how they are compare to other countries' kids [identify strengths/ needs/gaps & understand broadly the value they'll add to future talent pools]. ____ The go-to option could be rote learning (learning by memorisation/repetition). Let's look at a few countries that produce 'high-performing' academic achievers: 💡 Singapore: ranked top in 2022 PISA results for maths, reading & science, continues to use memorisation as a core element of learning. Their 'SkillsFuture' promotes lifelong learning and blends academic rigour with critical core skills. 💡 Estonia: 'Integrated Skills' programme enables students to uplevel in digital storytelling, problem-solving and mixes rote learning with digital and interdisciplinary learning projects. 💡 Finland: a renowned for high reading & science scores, prioritises holistic, student-centred learning over rote memorisation. Their research-backed 'Phenomenon-Based Learning', adopted by ~75% of schools, encourages cross-disciplinary thinking, that in turn: fosters critical thinking without hindering performance. Enabling balanced, hands-on learning with kids becoming adept problem-solvers. 💡 UK: The 'knowledge rich' curriculum, seeks to blend foundational knowledge with critical analysis. IOE - UCL's Faculty of Education and Society 2024 research tells us that memorisation is effective for building a knowledge base, teaching strategies MUST include context and application for best results. 💡 UAE: : Learning's been shifting to inclusive, project-based and tech-driven approaches. Ministry of Education – UAE reports a dual approach for improving student engagement and outcomes. --- 👩💻 Integrating rote learning with interactive methods enhances learner outcomes. Used effectively, it lays the land for more complex cognitive tasks.
