🦐 Why is responsible aquaculture so important? In 2022, farmed seafood accounted for nearly 57% of global seafood production. This growth emphasises the need to drive improvement and innovation within the industry and reward responsible farming practices that will allow us to continue to meet the global demand for seafood. 🌿 At ASC we are committed to contributing to the UN SDGs and making a measurable, positive impact via the standards we set for our certified farms. All ASC certified operations focus on addressing and minimising their environmental and social impact, in line with the UN’s guidelines. European #shellfish producers call for a common #aquaculture policy in the European Union, and more coastal space for low-trophic farming.🌊🦪🇪🇺 💡 The #European #Mollusc Producers Association (EMPA) has launched a #Manifesto for the #SustainableDevelopment of the European Shellfish Sector. 🦪 Representing shellfish #farmers from Spain, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Italy and Ireland, the manifesto, presented by EMPA president Addy Risseeuw in Brussels last week, makes the following 5 key recommendations: 1. Acknowledge the role of shellfish farming in reinforcing Europe’s #food sustainability, safety, sovereignty and #nutrition. 2. Triple the area allocated to shellfish farming to increase the production and the associated environmental and economic benefits. 3. Leverage the development of shellfish farming to accelerate #waterquality improvement. 4. Celebrating World Environment Day! The theme for this year is “our land, our future”. A call to conserving our resources through sustainable practices. As a fish farmer, I understand the role of aquaculture in promoting environmental sustainability if done right. 📍Aquaculture allows maximal use of limited resources which is land. A small piece of land that might not be suitable for arable crops can accommodate a tank or a concrete pond to raise fish for consumption and commercial purposes. 📍There is no waste with aquaculture. Fish effluents can serve as organic manure to plants. This is used in most aquaponics systems. 📍Fish wastes from processing can be used in the formulation of feed for livestock. In an integrated aquaculture system wastes from other animals can be fed to fish (e.g poultry-cum-fish) So when you think of sustainable land usage, aquaculture. When you think of fish farming, think of Sokvikia. Let's take responsibility for a greener and healthier tomorrow. #UnWED #WorldEnvironmentDay #greenbusiness #agribusiness #AquacultureScience #fishfarmervicky #fishfarming #fish #aquaculture #entrepreneur #business #foodsecurity #Sokvikiafarms #Youthandwomenempowerment #sdgs

Aquaculture is not without its controversies, often linked to environmental concerns and fish 🐟 welfare, but many of these criticisms stem from misconceptions that overlook the industry’s significant progress in sustainability. While some of these hold partial truth, the reality is neither black nor white—every food source has its pros and cons, and the goal is to find the least harmful alternative. In this article, Mathias TALMANT aims to debunk common myths surrounding salmon farming, while also demonstrating why this sector is poised for growth and how investors can benefit: https://lnkd.in/e2Zjk3yW #Sustainability #Investing #Aquaculture #Equities --Marketing communication-- Investing incurs risks. A major challenge in aquaculture is the vast amount of different marine species that are farmed across the world. At BioMar Australia alone we feed 11 different species and globally, we feed over 45 different species in more than 90 countries 🐟 Each species has different nutritional requirements, environmental preferences and behaviours, making feed formulation a complex task. For example, Barramundi prefer floating pellets, while Salmon prefer slow-sinking pellets. These minor differences can change how we formulate feed for different species. By combining our global and local R&D, BioMar can better understand each species’ nutritional requirements and formulate diets to meet them, creating a more efficient and sustainable aquaculture industry.
