For those who know me or our brand, you’ve probably seen the spirited debates I engage in with the North American Marine Alliance (NAMA), who support initiatives like Don’t Cage Our Oceans and Stop Trawler Bycatch. I’m outspoken in countering misinformation and oversimplification, defending and prioritizing domestic fisheries like Wild Alaska Pollock and the responsible native steelhead net pens of the Salish Tribes, which have been unfairly attacked by Patagonia's misguided campaign. Engaging in these debates isn’t a waste of time; it forces me to refine my views and continuously validate my assumptions. Like last night at 2 a.m., when I was digging into recent NOAA trawl bycatch data on the Bering Sea and Cook Inlet, reaffirming that Wild Alaska Pollock is indeed one of the cleanest, most regulated fisheries on the planet—despite NAMA's caustic challenges. Given our planet’s current state, I think we all could benefit from spirited, constructive debate—even if, like me, you rarely agree. So, when I saw NAMA’s article Hope in Muddied Waters, I took pause: https://lnkd.in/g3_hsuBC I’ve revisited it often since July, reflecting on its points and the Fed by Blue initiative it takes aim at. Borrowing its name from the Stanford Center of Ocean Solutions, it is indeed a prime example of performative allyship that overshadows genuine efforts to include smallholders in a thriving economy, while prioritizing the marketing hype of brands they directly invest in, and founders that give them cover. Like Feini, this is a dynamic I’ve unfortunately experienced firsthand. Why speak up now? Because backed by BioMar and Kvarøy Arctic, Fed By Blue is now expanding its influence, shaping retailer “education” on “responsible” sourcing in ways that side-step local products like ours, while accelerating direct investments and clawing back the last 6% of domestic seafood Americans consume annually. It’s deeply concerning to watch corporate-backed initiatives use black and brown people to influence retail marketplaces under the guise of progressiveness. And very interesting what they're choosing to support vs. marginalize. For instance, our largest and most lucrative Alaskan fisheries just suffered a $2 billion, one-year loss and a 50% drop in profitability, yet they're not even mentioned. Martin Luther King Jr. is often remembered for his work on racial equity, but his later Poor People’s Campaign took on intersecting issues like decent work & sustainable resource management. It’s unsurprising to see Fed By Blue allies like the Marine and Aquaculture Stewardship Councils recently and actively undermining the need to address urgent issues of labor exploitation and environmental degradation within their supply chains, see the work of Katrina Nakamura PhD NAMA deserves credit for courageously pointing out these dynamics. The water isn’t just muddy; it’s filthy. #humanrights #decentwork #localseafood #buyamerican #disruptive #justice Baratunde Thurston PBS

When this fair was established, it attracted many merchants in the seafood industry including exporters and importers to gather here to look for each other as well as to "SEE WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE? " But then, especially when COVID swept through, it cooled down the picture that Vietnamese exporters had painted for VIETFISH, the fair became "emptier" than in previous years. Exporters such as India, Indonesia, Korea, etc. are more present than importers coming to find quality and reputable supplies. Take a typical example: MEKSEA is the Platinum sponsor for Vietfish over many years and has invested extremely grandly in its booth, but the rate we welcome customers has gradually decreased. But that's not why we feel "bored" with VIETFISH, but it is the motivation for us to spread more to the international seafood community and say: Please come here, even though you have never been here before. never been intention but try coming here once, you will feel "it is true that the country is one of the top seafood exporters in the world", they have a variety of seafood products, especially nutritional value products extremely high but the price is extremely suitable. This is where you can find items that you "intended" to sell but didn't know where to start. This is where you can connect with "REAL" and "REPUTABLE" exporters instead of having to find these things on the INTERNET, but it brings many risks because it is impossible to authenticate the person sitting in front of the computer screen that we're working - "Who are they?" Seafood buyer participation in fisheries management decisions can support a more traceable, sustainable seafood industry 👉 https://bit.ly/3PZpa1K. Towards this end, we are working to ensure that seafood buyer voices engage decision makers in Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs). One example of this is our Korean Roundtable for Sustainable Tuna Fishing, which brings together Korea's largest and most influential seafood companies to jointly advocate for better management and operation of key tuna fisheries in the Western and Central Pacific Oceans 👉 https://bit.ly/4cZj1MB.

Some interesting information gleaned from presentations at last week's Seafood Expo Asia :- - 3.3 billion people get at least 20% of their daily animal protein from fish - Total fish consumption rose 122% from 1990 to 2018 - Around 35% of all fish and seafood is lost or wasted (2011 study) - The amount of global seafood coming from illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fisheries is estimated at 11-19% - 64% of globally farmed seafood is either sustainably certified or rated, compared to 17% for wild caught - Around 7% of the total APAC wild catch is Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified or engaged in a process to become certified. These cover 43 species, while the majority of the catch by weight is tuna - Globally there are 2,062 Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified farms in 52 countries producing 58 seafood species - An ASC global survey on consumers found that in Japan and Korea, freshness and price were by far the main considerations when buying seafood. 0% currently consider sustainability - SE Asia is predicted to be the biggest farmed producer of finfish and crustaceans by 2050, and greater China the biggest producer of molluscs Sources FAO, MSC, ASC, DNV #HKSSC #seafoodexpoasia
