Was COP16 Colombia a success or a failure? 🌎 You could argue it wasn't one or the other. Yes, progress was made but not nearly enough. Steps have been taken forward on the establishment of the Cali Fund around Digital Sequence Information (DSI) which locks in (potentially) large sums of funding BUT this is voluntary. By far the biggest disappointment must be around the lack of progress and ambition shown for Biodiversity with agreements on monitoring and implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) stalling, due to less than 25% of all nations submitting their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). What does this mean for biodiversity? 🌳 Positive steps have been taken but nowhere near enough. Ambition has stalled and inaction on the critical areas is probably what this COP in Cali will be remembered for. Listed below is our 2 good/2 bad Outcomes for COP16 and with a nod to the forthcoming COPS in COP29 Azerbaijan and then at COP16Riyadh. Sustainability Connects . . . . One COP down. Two to go . . . . As COP16 Colombia (the Biodiversity COP) ends, a good point to take stock ahead of COP29 Azerbaijan which will be focussed on Climate and then COP16Riyadh which will be centred on Desertification. The post below 👇 provides a good overview of the main takeaways which are: ➖ COP16 Colombia was neither a failure nor a success. frustratingly, it was a very mixed bag depending on your view point - some progress made, but a lot of critical areas where no progress was made at all. ✔ A key high point was the recognition and inclusion of indigenous voices in decision making and the development of the 'Cali Fund' but disappointingly this new mechanism will be voluntary NOT mandatory. Will be interesting to see what the positive engagement will be. ✖ A frustratingly low point is the severe lack of urgency or progress on either a Global Nature Fund or the Global Biodiversity Network Framework with ONLY 25% of all nations submitting their action plans and strategies (NBSAPs). ❔ COP29 Azerbaijan is up next. With the news earlier today confirming a new incoming administration in the USA, where will the focus be at this COP - the USA, China or the emerging middle powers? We'll find out in few days time. The 16th Biodiversity #COP is underway at #Cali, Colombia, from 21st October to 1st November. 🌿 Expected to be attended by 15,000 #delegates from over 190 countries, the goal of the conference is to implement measures that halt and reverse biodiversity loss with a commitment to 30x30, i.e. designate 30 percent of #Earth's land and ocean as protected areas by #2030. 🌳🌳 As the conference progresses, issues related to the financial mechanism also take center stage as attendees address the efficiency of the Global Environment Facility and challenges regarding governance which raises concerns regarding the access of eligible countries to finance flows.
