Embarking on the journey of the 23-24 Spring Architectural Design Studio II, we delve into the realm of “Transcalar Fauna; a Bio-Receptive Urban Tailoring” project with Zehra Delerel at GTU School of Architecture. As a part of Responsive Ground Lab., this studio represents a seamless continuation of our exploration into the intricate resonance between architectural design and bio-environmental influences. The studio aims to instill in students an appreciation for the nuanced ideation that take place between design phases, recognizing that innovation often sprouts in the spaces in between. Thus, the process lies in not just envisioning but actively crafting a future where architecture is a harmonious interplay between nature and innovation, where the city is not just a backdrop but an integral part of responsive acts. As a part of this hybrid process, the diffusion of AI is highlighted for its role in unlocking responsive potentials and exploring novel possibilities for transcalar scenarios, particularly in the context of bio-receptive environments. These possibilities appear to challenge traditional notions of scale, not in terms of size but in terms of living experiences. "Moment of Stillness" is a project born from a simple yet powerful idea: what if we could heal our environment using what's already around us? It's about seeing potential in the overlooked—both in materials and places. Moment of Stillness explores a radical approach to addressing environmental degradation and the consequences of capitalism by reimagining the skins of industrial sites. The project proposes using locally sourced agricultural waste—specifically corn cobs—to create a purifying material that absorbs air pollutants. Once processed in low Earth orbit, this material takes advantage of space's unique conditions to enhance its effectiveness as a "purifier skin," offering a groundbreaking solution for transforming neglected industrial areas. The originality of this project lies in its seamless integration of sustainable materials, space technology, and architectural imagination. Proposing a system that heals both the environment and industrial scars addresses a pressing need for ecological restoration while simultaneously encouraging a shift toward post-capitalist thinking. This "purifier skin" offers more than just a technological fix; it symbolises a moment of stillness for Earth to heal, inviting a rethinking of how we interact with the built environment. Throughout the design process, I learned the importance of thinking beyond conventional boundaries—both in terms of material sourcing and the role of architecture in society. The project taught me to view architecture not merely as a building practice but as a means of addressing more significant environmental sustainability issues, social equity, and technological innovation. Ultimately, it has shaped my belief that architecture can be a tool for healing, regeneration, and inclusivity in the post-capitalist era. 📣 There's just under a month left to apply for the Regenerative Architecture Index, with applications closing on 17.05.24. RAI aims to celebrate regenerative practice and communicate this to the wider construction industry, as well as identifying obstacles to progress and encouraging peer-to-peer knowledge sharing and advice. It recognises the need for a built environment that isn’t merely reducing its negative impacts, but has positive impacts for today and the long term. Participating practices will be invited to answer questions both on the practice itself and on the projects it delivers, under 3 broad headings. Part 1: Being a good ancestor, will look at evidence of long-term thinking and a concern for the well-being of future generations. Part 2: Co-evolving with nature, will look at measures to support a mutually enriching coexistence with the natural world. Part 3: Creating a just space for people, will look at issues around inclusivity, diversity, equality and engagement. Our recently released Regenerative Design Primer addresses these areas in detail, making it a key reference document when completing your application and when thinking about how your practice can move further towards regenerative design in the future. Results will be published in September 2024 on the Architecture Today website and in a special issue of Architecture Today. Graphs and tables indicating practices’ progress in specific areas will be accompanied by case studies, commentary and analysis designed to produce a comprehensive compendium of best practice in the transition to regenerative architecture.
