If all heart patients in India came together, we would form the 18th largest country in the world—that’s the staggering scale of heart disease in our nation — 90 million. Every two years, more people die from cardiovascular disease in India than the entire population of New York City. This is the harsh reality of heart disease in our country—a crisis that demands urgent attention and action. In 2016 alone, 63% of total deaths were due to non-communicable diseases (NCDs), with 27% directly attributed to CVDs. Most concerning is that 45% of CVD-related deaths occur in individuals aged between 40-69 years—a critical age group that forms the backbone of our workforce and families. Beyond the human cost, the economic ramifications are equally staggering. A joint report by the World Economic Forum and Harvard School of Public Health estimated that India would face economic losses of approximately $2.17 trillion due to CVD between 2012 and 2030. This underscores not just a health crisis, but an economic one that threatens the future prosperity of our nation. As a leading voice for patients across India, and in my role representing the Heart Health India Foundation at the Asia-Pacific Cardiovascular Disease Alliance Heart Summit 2024, the urgency of addressing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) couldn’t be clearer. As patient advocates, we are witnessing a growing epidemic of risk factors such as raised blood pressure, glucose, lipids, and increasing rates of obesity. Addressing this crisis requires not just medical solutions but systemic reforms. Identifying individuals at the highest risk and ensuring they receive proper, timely treatment can drastically reduce premature deaths and economic losses. India is making strides with bold initiatives. The Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is the world’s largest publicly funded health insurance program, transforming healthcare for millions. Life expectancy has soared from 32 years in 1947 to 70.19 years in 2022. The STEMI India Model has greatly improved heart attack care in Tamil Nadu and Goa, reflecting India’s innovation. At the Summit, I aim to co-create patient-centered solutions that emphasize early detection and equitable access to care, particularly for underserved populations. How do we make sure those most at risk aren’t overlooked? It’s not just the poor, elderly, rural, or men—it impacts the wealthy, young, urban, and women too. That’s the challenge we must address, as the stakes are too high for inaction. It’s time for us to join forces and reshape the future of cardiovascular health in India and in Asia Pacific. #HeartHealth #CVDPrevention #PatientAdvocacy #IndiaHealthCrisis #NCDsInIndia #HealthcareReform #HealthyIndia #EarlyDetectionSavesLives #GlobalHealthSummit #CardiovascularAwareness

Pulmonary Ventilation . One of the major roles of the lungs is to facilitate gas exchange between the circulatory system and the external environment. The lungs are composed of branching airways that terminate in respiratory bronchioles and alveoli, which participate in gas exchange. Most bronchioles and large airways are part of the conducting zone of the lung, which delivers gas to sites of gas exchange in alveoli. Gas exchange occurs in the lungs between alveolar air and the blood of the pulmonary capillaries. For effective gas exchange to occur, alveoli must be ventilated and perfused. Ventilation (V) refers to the flow of air into and out of the alveoli, while perfusion (Q) refers to the flow of blood to alveolar capillaries. Individual alveoli have variable degrees of ventilation and perfusion in different regions of the lungs. Collective changes in ventilation and perfusion in the lungs are measured clinically using the ratio of ventilation to perfusion (V/Q). Changes in the V/Q ratio can affect gas exchange and can contribute to hypoxemia #snsinstitution #snsdesignthinkers #designthinkings

Heard of #WarOnDiabetes, I’m sure? Well, I personally think we should wage war against #CardiovascularDisease too! According to the Singapore Heart Foundation (SHF), 23 people die from cardiovascular disease (heart diseases and stroke) every day. Cardiovascular disease accounted for 31.4% of all deaths in 2022. This means that almost 1 out of 3 deaths in Singapore is due to heart diseases or stroke. According to the Agency for Care Effectiveness (ACE), In Singapore, the 2022 National Population Health Survey reported that over one in three residents (37%) aged 18 to 74 years had hypertension, and that more than half of this group (53%) were previously undiagnosed. Although the prevalence of high blood cholesterol among Singaporeans decreased from 39.1% in 2020 to 31.9% in 2022. The mean LDL-cholesterol level among the newly diagnosed was 4.6 mmol/L. Many of the post #MyocardialInfarction clinic patients that I see are between their 50’s and 60’s, and a substantial proportion only have hypertension or hyperlipidaemia prior to the heart attack. How can we do better? Join us, for this seminar, on how you can play that role in #CVDPrevention and contribute towards #HealthierSG! Sign up here: https://lnkd.in/g8YFC7PH

**HMPV in India: Current Situation** The panic surrounding HMPV in India, with three cases recently reported, is understandable but should be contextualized. Here are some points to consider: Rare but Not Unprecedented: Sporadic cases of HMPV are detected worldwide, but the virus usually circulates during cooler months. Comparison with Other Viruses: While HMPV can cause serious illness in vulnerable populations, it is generally less well-known than RSV or influenza. Potential Causes for Concern: Increased awareness and testing may have led to its identification, but there’s no evidence yet of widespread outbreaks in India. **When to Seek Medical Attention** Seek immediate medical care if you or someone you know experiences: -Difficulty breathing. -High fever that persists or worsens. -Blueish skin or lips (a sign of oxygen deprivation). -Severe fatigue or confusion. **Stay Informed, Not Alarmed** The detection of HMPV cases in India is a reminder to remain vigilant but not to panic. This virus is not new, and while it can cause significant illness in certain groups, the risk to the general population is low. Adopting basic hygiene practices and seeking timely medical care can effectively mitigate its impact. Let's hear from an Expert. https://lnkd.in/gQzAD2Zf
"HMPV is a common virus:" There's no need for an alarm. It is not a new virus to come out of China, says medical expert Dr Rajeev Jayadevan MD, DNB, MRCP(UK), ABIM Med, ABIM Gastro. WATCH HERE: https://lnkd.in/gVvjzziq
