Highlights from COP29 Azerbaijan November 13 - Exponential Race to the Top – Actions, Finance, Policies Following a scene-setting presentation about the economic damage of climate change, this event brings together experts and practitioners in corporate sustainability. Exponential Roadmap Initiative presents work that sketches what the operating space for business may look like in a net zero world and presents insights from stakeholder research on transition planning. Corporate practitioners highlight successes and and challenges with their transition planning and panelists discuss how to reconcile profitability with sustainability. This session seeks to showcase progress in corporate transition planning. It also aims to broaden the horizon and approach transition plans as a tool for exponential transformation rather than a regulatory requirement. It aims to provide examples and spark wider discussions around addressing profitability concerns in the transition. “SMEs account for 70% of the world’s workforce, contribute more than 50% of global GDP and, according to the OECD and European Commission, contribute between 50% and 64% of total business sector emissions.” A really interesting statistic that highlights the significant role that SMEs play in the climate crisis, but also the immense opportunity they have to help reduce global emissions. I recognise it can be hard to see how actions we have as an individual, or as a small or medium size business, can have any noticeable change when it comes to the environment, but I think that when we look at it collectively, it shows that the action we take as individuals can contribute to a broader, cumulative effort that can lead to a substantial, positive environmental impact. Survey results also shows that SMEs that take climate action often enhance their business reputation, helping them stand out from competitors and strengthen customer retention. 🌍 Finance is the main theme in the Nordic Pavillion at #COP29 today, November 14! At what is being called the ‘climate finance COP’, countries and institutions are discussing how climate initiatives can be funded and scaled up globally. Parties are expected to establish a new annual global finance target, also known as the NCQG.    According to the IPCC financial flows for climate change mitigation need to increase significantly to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, particularly to limit global warming to well below 2°C, and ideally 1.5°C. However, mobilizing the necessary finance for climate action remains a fundamental barrier, particularly in low-income nations, which need support to both mitigate emissions and adapt to the impacts of climate change.  In the Nordic Pavilion today, you’ll meet Nordic Investment Bank, Nordic Development Fund (NDF) and Nefco - the Nordic Green Bank. Second Annual High-Level Ministerial Round Table on Just Transition Mandated event | UNFCCC - 18 November 2024, Baku BINGO 1min Statement – that I due to time constraint when so many ministers wanted to speak, could not present. My name is Pär Larshans. I work at Ragn-Sells Group, that is dedicated to spearhead the transition to a circular economy. It is my honour to address you on behalf of the International Chamber of Commerce at this High-Level Ministerial Round Table on Just Transition today. Ambitious NDCs are a foundational vehicle for embedding much-needed just transition considerations into clear policy and investment frameworks, and accelerating the implementation of company targets and business investment into mitigation and adaptation policies that leave no one behind. One example, today we co-arranged a session with UNEP that addressed the need to convert todays waste water treatment plants into Resource Recovery plants that will support the local community and leave no one behind. ·      But if the NDC:S is not designed in the right way, climate change policies and actions may result in job losses and broader socio-economic challenges. Overlooking the context barriers faced by certain regions, sectors, and businesses in the climate transition, and failing to mitigate associated vulnerabilities, risks leading to a disorderly, partial, and costly transition.  With the right conditions in place the cost to implement resource recovery plants will be easy to finance, an example that was mentioned today by UN Environment Programme in the session had a payback time as low as 3 years. ·      The global business and industry community highlights the importance of meaningfully engage with all stakeholders, including businesses – that are key implementing partners for national governments to achieve their climate goals – to develop and implement ambitious and 1.5-aligned NDCs, rooted in the real economy. ·      Effective implementation from businesses in all areas of the Paris Agreement can only happen if countries plans and goals are clear, transparent and readily understood. BUSINESS will both INNOVATE and INVEST if we have long term conditions and are INVITED to contribute.

RICS’ participation at #COP29 this past week was another key milestone in its commitment to lead and influence on decarbonising the built environment. Last year’s COP28 saw RICS pledging its support to the #BuildingsBreakthroughInitiative, signed by a group representing one-third of the world’s population and two-thirds of the world’s GDP who committed to work together to ensure that near-zero emission and resilient buildings become the new normal by 2030. Since last year, we are leading a priority action of the United Nations Buildings Breakthrough, focusing on standards and certifications. We are also the co-intervention lead for the WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development Market Transformation Action Agenda. This focuses on achieving harmonisation of WLCA across the full value chain of the built environment. Measuring whole life carbon is crucial and can contribute to countries meeting their #NDCs through the reduction of the carbon emissions from their own built environments. However, the RICS Sustainability Report 2024 shows that this is far from market standard, showing that 58% of respondents say they either they don’t measure #EmbodiedCarbon in their projects or when they do, it doesn’t influence their choices of materials, systems and components. Change can be hard, but the longer it is delayed, the harder it becomes. We are moving in the right direction but must move faster to avoid reaching the climate tipping point.  

Embodied carbon, I.e., carbon that goes into construction of assets accounts for half of the carbon emissions. It remains locked in forever - there is no mitigation once that carbon is emitted. What is operational carbon for one industry (say cement, steel) is embodied carbon for another (say construction, real estate). Unless we address the demand side of the equation no amount of focus on the supply side in isolation will help. My brilliant colleague Yash Singh, PMP, LSSGB, LEED AP and his very able team, working along with industry stakeholders, have created the computational tools and supply chain data for low carbon projects in India. These AI enabled solutions are now a core part of KPMG's solution offerings for Decarbonisation. This paper, released on the occasion of #CoP29 encapsulates the possibilities and the asks from policy makers and industry. It has been a real privilege for me to work closely with this deep thinking talented team.
