The panel of experts are here to share what can be learned from fire deaths in the past, and how the sector can work to reduce the risks of such future tragedies. With: Adam Sanders, Jan Taranczuk CIHCM AIFSM OHP, and Carl Traynor MIET CertCIH. We are housing managers not fire safety managers, he points out, but it is important. Adam talks about some of the challenges of getting to grips with the legislative changes. From a practical point, Jan says housing officers should be sharing fire safety information during the course of their routine dealings with tenants. People with an infirmity or an impairment are those most likely to be injured or killed in a fire: housing managers can and should be identifying who those residents are. There's a big shift to a more structured approach to building safety, Adam thinks, and the more we do that the bigger the difference can be made. How do we reduce the risks, Jan asks. Fire doors, with a working closer, that meet the relevant standards. Adam says we need to be take a risk assessment on doors; they don't stop fires starting, they seek to minimise the consequences. Management of risk is the key thing. Data is crucial, but we need to systemic some of this stuff for resident Engagement, Adam days. Resident engagement does not just reduce the severity of a fire -- it can prevent a fire breaking out. You can't control people's behaviour, but you can educate people, says an audience member in regard to dealing with e-bikes and the like. Another audience member shares that his organisation is trying to take proactive approach to assessing risks. The discussion turns to encouraging people not to leave devices on charge unattended. 🌟 Wrapped up the Housing Help Services Certificate from East York East Toronto Family Resources (EYET) Over the past 4 weeks, I balanced intensive training sessions — 8 sessions at 3 hours each — with my work as a Settlement Worker in a shelter. It’s been a challenging but rewarding journey, and I’m grateful to myself for pushing through. Through this training, I connected with incredible housing professionals and gained crucial insights into key areas to better support my clients. We covered some critical topics that truly resonate with the work I do: Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) & Harm Reduction: Understanding how to provide inclusive support to clients of all backgrounds, while using harm reduction approaches, is essential for creating safer, non-judgmental spaces in our community. Tenants’ & Landlords’ Rights: Learning the ins and outs of tenant and landlord rights is invaluable for advocating on behalf of clients. Having this knowledge empowers me to better support clients in understanding their rights and responsibilities as they transition to housing stability. Housing Access & Income Support: Accessing housing often depends on securing income support. This training deepened my understanding of available programs and benefits, enabling me to help clients maximize their resources for affordable housing options. Housing Stability, Evictions, and Mental Health: Housing stability is critical for mental health and well-being. Understanding the intersection of mental health issues with the housing system and how eviction impacts individuals has given me tools to help clients navigate this complex area. As a Settlement Worker in a shelter, my goal is to help clients successfully exit the shelter system and transition to stable housing. This certificate has provided me with even more tools to guide clients in crisis and support them as they navigate the complexities of the housing system.
