How to act as the new person at work? We've outlined a step-by-step guide for you to get your new job or internship off to a great start. Get enough sleep. Dress appropriately. Be a little early (or at least on time). Smile and make eye contact. Introduce yourself. Take initiative. Ask questions. Listen and take notes.

Very useful toolkit for those offering work / work experience to young people in the creative sector.

50% of our Q1 interns graduated few months ago. The other 50% graduated several years back. None of them studied cyber security in college but they all have now fully joined the cyber army. Jamaal Raheem and Princess Ugwokaegbe here are in the latter group of interns who graduated many years ago. They both took a pay cut to join the program and I can say their career switch is well and truly on! Now they know how much that was worth it. Last week, while conducting the final interviews for our Q2 applicants, I came across two highly impressive individuals like Jamaal and Princess (i.e. those identifying as he/him & she/her) who were desperate to get picked. I decided against that idea 💡 because these individuals, with 10 or more years of experience under their belts in different fields, are easily in the top 3% of earners in the country. If you’re already making CISO level salaries in other fields, it just might not be the best idea to go all the way back to the base of the ladder in another field. As they say though, love is blind and a true passion that burns within your soul is one that can never be put out. I have committed to meeting these individuals (in person) in months to come to see how I can help translate their desire into outcome. Back to Jamaal Raheem and Princess Ugwokaegbe , I am glad to see their competence and confidence levels shoot through the roof several weeks into the program. For ones who didn’t study anything close to cyber security in college, these individuals, like their co-interns, have really impressed me. Oh! What am I even saying? 3 subtle things I have picked up from an Expo 1. Few people ask interesting and personal questions that trace a company representative's past experiences within the company. Such questions often reveal far more factual information than what representatives were asked to memorise beforehand. 2. Pay attention to how people break eye contact with you: eyes to the sides = not interesting conversation. 3. Company representatives are far more relaxed and, thus, receptive to interpersonal connections when not behind the podium. Meet them where they are not in their company mode(Water Fountain)

I spent hours preparing for an Expo. Here is what really works. 1. Set the right goal. They are not hiring you on the spot; they are not saying anything you can't google at home. Set a goal for networking. 2. Focus on learning about the company and the person you are speaking with. Ask about their last project, how they got into the company, and how they grew in the role. 3. Have a few generic questions in case your mind goes blank. Try Tim Ferris's "If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it, what would it say and why?" 4. Making appropriate jokes. Stop robotically reciting whatever questions you prepared. Pulling a leg would do much more service to connect than a question like "What is the culture like in the company?" 5. Write down a few points after talking to one company. They would come in handy when you connect on Linkedin

Talking about change is good. But action is better. We’re launching something special. Austin started The Gen Z Club to empower and inspire young people through networking events. I started DIVERSE. to get young people hired and build careers they can be proud of. We’re coming together to host an early careers fair introducing hundreds looking for internships, apprenticeships and grad schemes to employers. And sharing insights that will help shape their careers. This is exactly the type of event I’d wish I’d gone to. I’m a big believer in: If you want to see it. Create it.
