Today is Gandhi Jayanti, the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as the "Father of the Nation” in India. Today is also the UN declared International Day of Non-Violence worldwide. Gandhi was referred to as “Mahatma,” meaning a great soul. He was fondly known as “Bapu.” While growing up, I read little about Mahatma Gandhi and I made little connections to how his influences contributed to world peace. It suddenly dawned on me most recently how his work of non-violence contributed to my freedom too and the many independence that all nations hold from the British colonial power. Earlier this year, and as part of 145 years on from Fiji Indian British slavery, I wrote few articles in which I mentioned the Mahatma Gandhi Movement that created raves around the world. I talked about the 3million African slaves and the 2 million Indian slaves. I wrote about women in the slaved sugarcane farms of Fiji and other parts of the world. I also wrote about New Zealand’s contributions towards the violence on these slaves in Fiji and the Pacific. But most importantly, I wrote about the will power women carried to bring ajadi or freedom that we all benefit from today. It is Black History Month in October in UK. The theme this year is #reclaimingnarratives. It is also Fiji Independence Day on 10th of October. I was never taught my own history and decided to go digging through many stories in my thirties. My history was buried in the celebrations of what the British invented for us. Colonisation was never discussed but civilisation was. We were made to believe that we were going to benefit from that narrative only. As a development practitioner, I have the opportunity to take deep dives in what forms our narratives and the danger in those single stories. I also have the opportunity today to change the narrative and tell the truth. I often stand in places that are difficult and whitewashed differently even with my own people. I have relearnt the history and reconnected the dots of violence and freedom, and of carving a strong identity for myself. In fact, an identity so strong that it even scares me and knocks me off my feet. Today, I stand tall while I acknowledge and celebrate the accomplishments that Mahatma Gandhi led as an Indian. I stand firm and uphold the contributions millions made towards freedom. I uphold the mana of my ancestors and millions others who have made the world a better place. Today, I celebrate being an Indian and I hope that the sacrifices those who have come before us is acknowledged, appreciated, and known. This is the taonga or gift of life that Indians have given to each one of us. This is the gift of freedom. One at a time, let’s help uphold and change the narratives. True democracy is in knowledge. Reflecting on December: Drawing Inspiration from the Sacrifices in Sikh History As December approaches, the Sikh community solemnly remembers the unparalleled sacrifices of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, the ninth Guru of the Sikhs, and his grandsons, the young Sahibzadas. Their profound acts of bravery and principled stands are not just historical events; they are enduring lessons of moral courage and unwavering faith. In 1675, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, revered for his deep spirituality and commitment to justice, was martyred for defending the religious freedoms of others, showcasing his profound bravery and selflessness. This ultimate sacrifice was made in the defence of those who were not even of his own faith, highlighting his exceptional dedication to the principles of human rights and religious freedom. Years later, his grandsons, Sahibzada Zorawar Singh Ji and Sahibzada Fateh Singh Ji, at the tender ages of just nine and seven, were bricked alive for their refusal to abandon their faith. Their sacrifice is remembered with the deepest respect and serves as a stark reminder of the virtues of steadfastness and resilience in the face of brutal oppression. Their legacy teaches us that our values are our strongest assets. 3. Advocacy and Voice: The ultimate sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji advocates for the protection of all individuals’ rights to live and worship freely. Today, it inspires us to champion inclusivity and justice within our communities and beyond.
