Concrete is the backbone of modern construction, and its foundation lies in efficient management of concrete aggregates – sand, gravel, and crushed stone. But traditional methods of stockpile monitoring and volume measurement can be time-consuming, labor-intensive, and prone to human error. Enter drones, which are transforming the concrete aggregate industry with their versatility and data-gathering prowess. One of the most significant applications of drones in concrete aggregates is stockpile management. Drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors can capture detailed aerial images and 3D point clouds of stockpiles. It's wild to see how far photogrammetry has come... While this may look like a flythrough of LiDAR data, it's actually created from over 1,500 images we took to verify the location of stub-ups during installation as part of our 3D Construction Verification workflow...while photogrammetry has always had issue with thin objects (pipes, wires, poles, etc.) it handled these surprisingly well. Drone Post Processing | 3D Modelling I'm excited to share a recent project where cutting-edge drone technology met complex challenges. We were tasked with creating a 3D model of a house that had been severely damaged by fire and was subsequently condemned, and due to the unsafe conditions a traditional on-foot inspection wasn't an option. Our solution? Employing various-sized drones to capture both internal and external imagery of the property. From there, we processed this data into a comprehensive 3D model. The result is a detailed, interactive full-scale representation of the house with cm grade tolerances, allowing for thorough assessment without physical access and the ability to gather precise measurements of the structural damage. Projects sometimes include images that should not be considered during processing in order to obtain better results. For example, images taken during takeoff or landing should be removed.
