In this month newsletter, we focus on the action-research carried out in Kenya and the evaluations carried out in Uganda, Yemen, Palestine and Iraq to promote girls and women's rights and to contrast gender-based violence and discrimination. The Inclusive Development Unit, together with the M&E and Impact Evaluation Unit, has been working with local partner to contribute to the creation of more equal societies where women and girls are empowered and can live free from violence. On page 18, a reminder of how the Global Gag Rule works as it will be reintroduced and could be expanded. If funded by a US INGO that has signed the gag rule, a local NGO can be "gagged" from simply sharing information on abortion even if they themselves do not receive USAID funding. As seen before, this impacts partnerships at the local level and, ultimately, the ability to meet the needs of women and young people everywhere. The Global Gag Rule applies even in countries where abortion is legal.

Through its Feminist International Assistance Policy, Canada has committed itself to protect and advocate for the sexual and reproductive rights of all women and girls. Yet it is failing to take meaningful action to address the extreme reproductive harm the Israeli government is causing Palestinians in Gaza. Reproductive Justice means going beyond providing humanitarian aid to the vulnerable; it necessitates that we recognize and dismantle the political violence that produce that vulnerability. https://lnkd.in/gDxM9rwh

IPPF RECEIVES USAID NOTIFICATION TO STOP WORK IN AFRICA Violence, power, and control—these are the tools of tyranny, often wielded by men who perpetuate systems of oppression. IPPF recognizes these cycles and refuses to engage with the Trump Administration’s unjust directives. Let’s be clear: this decision stems from abuse of power, imposed unilaterally from Washington, without dialogue or consideration of national counterparts. It is part of a broader, coordinated attack on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) that seeks to erase marginalized voices and dismantle hard-won human rights under the guise of policy. It is NO secret: ✨ IPPF has already rejected the conditionality of the Global Gag Rule. ✨ IPPF proudly stands for sexual and gender diversity. ✨ IPPF is unwavering in its commitment to gender equity. ✨ IPPF fights for the inclusion of women, LGBTQI+ people, and marginalized communities. ✨ IPPF champions accessibility for all. We will NOT let USAID, President Trump, or any administration demand that we prove our dedication to DEIA principles—or compromise on our mission to uphold sexual and reproductive rights for everyone, everywhere. Marie-Evelyne-Petrus-Barry, Regional Director of IPPF Africa Region said, “IPPF Africa Region is repulsed by these policies that have a clear and obvious aim of eradicating bodily autonomy, promoting white supremacy through the rewriting of history, and putting in real danger the lives of historically marginalised people. This administration is actively trying to erase the rights of those it deems unworthy, including women, people of African descent, LGBTIQ+ individuals, refugees, and migrants. Let it be clear: IPPF will not bow down to the tyranny of patriarchal directives. Our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion is unshakable, and our anti-racism stance is a public declaration of our values and our mission. To our colleagues and partners: we urge you to stand firm in rejecting policies that perpetuate privilege, power, violence and control. Together, we will continue to fight for a world where sexual and reproductive health and rights are universal, unapologetic, and uncompromised. This is who we are, and we will not waver." #stopworkorder

I applaud IPPF for their courageous moral leadership in this time of abusive wielding of power, censorship and bias, perpetuated by right wing ideologies, enablers, and (sadly) weak leadership who preach solidarity but when the time comes and it really matters, many disappear or shrink into silence. This is a hard choice to make, but there are those who act on their fears and thoughts, and those who act and lead on their internal moral compass, often choosing - or being called to - the more difficult path (because neither option is easy and we must acknowledge that). My litmus test in these situations is: can I look myself in the mirror, stand straight with head held high, own my decision, and when you go to bed, there is no anguish when you try to fall asleep, because today you did the right thing and listened to that internal compass, so you had integrity in listening to yourself and acting on the answer and the voice of your true authentic human soul. To the Stoics among us who are driven by the pursuit of fairness and justice, and integrity drives your actions: We must stand together and resist and fight injustice and discrimination and targeted attacks on marginalised groups and those who don't follow the doctrine of hate, because love and acceptance is a personal choice and and contains far more power, and combined with true solidarity, we create a movement for change where love and fundamental rights prevail over the political madness of the moment (which understates the death and suffering that happens as a result). This is when leadership matters, and when allyship matters most. I am thankful for the lives saved and the pain avoided, and the dignity maintained for the millions served by IPPF today, and every day they CAN, because there may come a day when they can't. But today they can, and they did! And that is a beautiful act of courage and love, and we are indebted to all the good people soldiering on until they can do no more, or achieve less. But the movement wont run out of resources! If anything we collectively draw upon more of the power that resides within us. Thank you IPPF and partners helping our fellows who needed your support today and for refusing to allow white (largely male) supremacist ideology to take away the fundamental gifts given to us as members of ONE human RACE (our rights).

As Director of SHQ and Founder of Queer and Diverse Pathways, I stand in solidarity with IPPF and strongly support their unwavering commitment to sexual and reproductive rights. The recent USAID directive to halt IPPF’s work in Africa is yet another example of violence, power, and control used to perpetuate oppression. We must be clear: this is not just an attack on IPPF—it’s part of a broader effort to erase marginalised voices, dismantle human rights, and deny bodily autonomy to those who need it most. I especially call attention to the current review of gender care for young people in Queensland—every individual, no matter their race, gender, ability, or socioeconomic status, deserves the right to access life-saving medical care and to thrive as their authentic selves. Now is the time for us all to reject the tyranny of patriarchal and oppressive policies and stand firm in our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Together, we can continue the fight for universal, unapologetic health care rights and bodily autonomy. This is a fight I am proud to stand behind, and I call on others to do the same. #StopWorkOrder

Day 3/16 of Activism against GBV! The intricate web of economic dependence is often the invisible handcuff that binds women to abusive relationships. Financial insecurity can be a potent silencer, preventing women from speaking out against violence and demanding their rights. However, when women gain economic autonomy, they are more likely to break free from the shackles of abuse. Economic empowerment is not just a moral imperative, it's a strategic intervention that can disrupt the dynamics of power and control that perpetuate GBV. As we navigate the complexity of GBV, let's recognize the transformative potential of economic empowerment. By investing in women's economic independence, we can disrupt the cycles of violence and abuse and create a more equitable distribution of power and resources. #Tosilika #HEYO #SRHR4ALL #UnlockMySRHR #EndGBV #OrangeTheWorld #16DaysofActivism Marvin Solitarian Yiacia Ayikoru Hatipha Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) Alliance Uganda
