🤝 Introducing the Sobrotherhood project: Reviving Community Connection through Biophilic Design! Last week marked the kickoff for this collaborative project led by Living Future Europe, in partnership with Espaço Municipal, Renovação Urbana e Gestão de Património, E.E.M. and the Municipality of Maia, situated in the Metropolitan Area of Porto, Portugal 🇵🇹 In partnership with local stakeholders, Sobrotherhood seeks to activate self-sustaining socio-economic ecosystems at the district level, leveraging marginalized perspectives, biophilic design principles, and the NEB guiding framework. Our vision is to transform neglected public spaces surrounding social housing structures into dynamic hubs for social engagement and economic empowerment. The project anticipates generating positive socio-environmental and economic impacts, fostering better connections with nature, enhancing intergenerational communication, building resilience, and empowering marginalized perspectives. Sobrotherhood aims to set a new precedent for sustainable urban revitalization. Programme update: Máximapark: green Sagrada Familia of Utrecht (Day 3) – Urban Trail Máximapark is a celebrated, award-winning, multi-functional public park that invites the surrounding communities to meet and escape the hustle and bustle of busy city life. When the construction of a whole new suburb of Utrecht began in the 1990s, the community needed a unifying public space that would not only bring the 100,000 new residents together, but also create a shared identity. At 300 hectares, Máximapark in Leidsche Rijn is the largest urban park in Utrecht and serves as an inspiration for future urban parks. A green cathedral is being built, and a historic river course from Roman times, the Viking Rhine, is even being restored. The management of the park is a public-private partnership. On this week's edition of #RenoNations, we head to Estonia, where the City of Tartu's "Tartu Renovates" program is transforming the way apartment buildings approach renovation. 🇪🇪 The #TartuRenovates service, launched in cooperation with Novarc Group MMC and funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB), offers comprehensive, free support to apartment associations, simplifying the renovation process from planning to construction. 🏢🔧 🏡 The program is designed for six to nine-story buildings, targeting over half of Tartu's apartment stock built between 1970 and 2000. The support provided by Tartu Renovates is completely free for the 150 apartment associations that have already signed up. 💡 Free professional consultants guide housing associations through every stage of the renovation process, from technical assessments and energy labelling to securing funding and overseeing construction. Additionally, a design grant covers up to a fourth of design costs, ensuring comprehensive support. 💸 Cost-effectiveness is ensured by thorough financial planning at the beginning of each application. Detailed analyses are conducted, calculating the financial result of the renovation as a real estate investment per building, apartment, and square meter. Payback periods are determined, ensuring a clear understanding of the financial benefits. 📈 The program's phased approach — preparation, decision-making, and contract signing — is well-structured and replicable. This clear and systematic setup makes the program highly scalable. The "Tartu Renovates" program is a great example of how targeted support and structured processes can drive renovations. For what reason, an urban development plan, which starts from the assumption of creating a dense residential area, well connected to a green public space, to the sea and to a cultural space, for the new citizens of Porvoo, brings to a "heated" evening debate with residents and politicians, who oppose saying: "why aren't single-family houses built !!?" Why does the city of Porvoo's effort to create a new community, often clash with the provincialistic, closed, anti-ecological and marginalizing vision of "ordinary respectable" citizens? The urban structure of old Porvoo itself is founded around the idea of compactness, services connected to residential buildings and the usability of open spaces for pedestrians. The very concept of the plan for Edelfeltinranta is based precisely on the desire to broaden the horizon of Porvoo, learning from what the past has taught us, and modernizing the lifestyle. But keeping in mind the key elements of a good urban planning intervention: public space and private space, the nature connected to them and the need for interaction between human beings. The horizontal development of the city, already extensively proposed and implemented in Porvoo, is not a sustainable model. It is neither ecologically nor socially sustainable. 🚶♀️🚲 Exploring Haakon VII Street: A Path Towards a More Walkable and Bike-Friendly Trondheim!🌳🏙️ As part of our ENACT 15-Minute City project, we recently hosted a multi-stakeholder workshop in Trondheim, focusing on Haakon VII Street at Lade—a key area poised for significant residential growth. Our aim is to reimagine this street as a vibrant, people-centered space that aligns with Trondheim's vision of becoming a "10-minute city," where residents live close to essential services and green spaces, promoting walking and cycling over car use. Key takeaways from the workshop highlighted the street’s current challenges, including heavy car traffic and a lack of appeal for pedestrians and cyclists. However, it also showcased the community's enthusiasm for transformative change, with ideas ranging from more green spaces and safer crossings to better connectivity between neighborhoods. This collaborative effort brought together diverse voices, from city planners to local residents, paving the way for actionable insights and future improvements. Together, we can make Haakon VII Street a true asset to the community and a model for sustainable urban development. Au vert" Porte de La Chapelle Between Porte de la Chapelle and Parc de la Villette, the Éole-Évangile site forms a vast triangle of almost 13,000m². What was the project? To transform this area into a new district, a model of urban ecology and sustainable development. A principle that guided the construction of the housing, offices, shops and cultural and sports facilities that saw the light of day in 2023. The result is the Îlot Fertile, the first zero-carbon neighbourhood in Paris, with 126 mixed-use homes, 164 student flats, 150 flats for young workers and a youth hostel. It also features a landscaped path dedicated to soft mobility, a 3,500 m² sports complex and 3,800 m² of green spaces, including orchards and vegetable gardens. Töölönlahdenpuisto Approved // The Urban Environment Committee of Helsingin kaupunki – Helsingfors stad – City of Helsinki has approved the objectives and goals outlined in the idea and concept plan for Töölönlahdenpuisto. The objectives will serve as guidelines for the future development of the park. The planning process began with a workshop involving key stakeholders, leading to a unified vision for the park’s future. Based on community feedback, the plan aims to preserve essential landscape and natural features while enhancing the park’s spatial, vegetative, and functional qualities. The four main priorities for the park's development are to: ✅ Preserve natural features and increase green space ✅ Establish the park as a year-round landmark for Helsinki ✅  Enhance opportunities for recreation and well-being ✅ Support diverse experiences and events The plan is developed by MASU Planning in close collaboration with the Helsinki Municipality.
