The challenges of today go beyond deadlines decided by governments, territorial claims of oceans and lands, or borders drawn on a map. Addressing global issues is a shared responsibility that requires collaborative efforts and swift decision-making. By dismantling the barriers between science, business, and policy, we can deepen communication and enhance our understanding of the pan-Arctic ecosystem, making each of us feel empowered and integral to the solution. Modern challenges, such as the impacts of climate change, fostering sustainable development, and navigating political tensions, are deeply interconnected. While the green transition's financial, societal, and environmental costs will not be fairly distributed worldwide, the Arctic holds a significant role in our global solutions. We hope to see you next year at the Arctic Frontiers 2025 Conference in Tromsø, Norway on the 27th - 30th of January.

🌎 As the global ocean community convenes at the 2024 Ocean Decade Conference in Barcelona this week, Germany is passionately advocating the critical importance of international collaboration. Germany and Canada, for instance, are key partners in Arctic research, studying the impacts of climate change in one of Earth's most critical and vulnerable regions. This partnership exemplifies how joint efforts can lead to greater understanding and more effective actions to protect our oceans. 🌊 #SaveOurOcean #OceanDecade2024 #GermanCanadianRelations

Reflections from Arctic Pioneers on the Gaia Arctic Summit 💚 We are overwhelmed by the incredible response, appreciation, and the weight of responsibility that comes with hosting a climate change event. From the outset, we made it clear to our audience, speakers, participants, and partners that the Gaia Arctic Summit wasn't just another climate talk show. Our mission was clear: 🎯 we aimed to make a tangible difference for the Arctic and Northern Norway. 🎯 An opportunity for locals to build network with national and international expertise. 🎯 We set out to shed light on overlooked policies, highlight financial sector schemes in climate-friendly initiatives, and showcase sustainable businesses driving both environmental and economic success. Now, as the event draws to a close, we bear the responsibility of turning our gains into action. Together, we'll work to ensure that when we reconvene next year, more businesses in the North have benefited, and our reach extends even further into coastal communities. We're keen to begin working on the report, initiatives, and solutions that will encourage coastal communities and businesses in the north to take action for a sustainable and climate-friendly future. Two weeks ago, Anne Marit Waade and my article about arctic (production) landscapes and "Borgen: Power & Glory" was published. But since it happens to share the 'publication date' with my daughter, who was born on the same day, two weeks of parental leave has naturally postponed the announcement. Anyway - here it is, based partly on my case study from my recent dissertation, but (much) further developed, broadened and written in collaboration with the brilliant Anne Marit: https://lnkd.in/d-RGj8ZA In the article, we introduce the concept of 'contestedness' in relation to Arctic (production) landscapes and a case study of "Borgen: Power & Glory" (2022). The season of Borgen highlights Greenland's complex dynamics through 4 types of contestedness: 1) culturally through postcolonial tensions, 2) (geo)politically through conflicting interests over natural resources, 3) environmentally through the impact of global warming, and 4) commercially through the growing tourism-related screen production. Additionally, the article examines location management and the industry's contested nature, contributing to the location study method approach. In addition, my dissertation is still publicly available - now on my Lund University research profile: https://lnkd.in/d4Vf62iz

We’re excited to announce our recent collaboration with the Geophysical Institute of Peru (Instituto Geofísico del Perú) in their work to promote the Observatory of Scientific Knowledge on Climate Change in Peru ( https://lnkd.in/gUFkijjS ). This initiative aims to make scientific knowledge (or “interpretations”) more accessible, providing valuable inputs for decision-making and strengthening climate governance. On Wednesday, November 27th, IPON team members Ingrid Edith Arotoma Rojas and Andrea Valdivia-Gago met with IGP to discuss how IPON can support Peru’s National Adaptation Communication on Climate Change. Our role will focus on providing strong scientific evidence to back this critical process, especially regarding Indigenous peoples. At IPON, we believe that science should be at the heart of climate-related decision-making, and we’re proud to contribute to this effort. By working together with IGP, we hope to ensure that solid, evidence-based knowledge guides Peru’s adaptation strategies and policies. This collaboration highlights the power of partnership and the importance of connecting science with action to address the challenges of climate change. We’re happy to be part of this journey toward a more resilient and informed future.

Sea Smart’s mission is to get youth excited about our ocean and empower them to be ocean heroes! We empower youth by discussing the diverse threats our ocean faces and teaching tangible actions they can take to protect our marine ecosystems and make a positive difference in the world. "All life on Earth, including humanity, cannot exist without our oceans. But our ocean is in deep trouble. We must act now to save our ocean - and ourselves. One of the best ways to do this is to ensure our future generations are armed with the knowledge and skills they need to become environmental champions." - Dr. Elaine Leung. Sea Smart was founded by marine biologist, Dr. Elaine Leung, an international speaker and expert on ocean issues who’s inspired waves of change in the hearts and minds of people worldwide.
