In this Off The Page episode, author Robin Visser discusses QUESTIONING BORDERS with host Li-Ping Chen. https://buff.ly/3SjRPzL Visser contrasts the dominant Han Chinese cosmology of center and periphery that informs what she calls “Beijing Westerns” with Indigenous and hybridized ways of relating to the world that challenge borders, binaries, and hierarchies. #ListenUP #OffThePage #Literature #LiteraryStudies #Ecoliterature #ChineseLiterature #TaiwaneseLiterature #China #Taiwan

Watched this BBC documentary of Easter Island's mystery with family to draw lessons for my little ones: -Overconsumption and exploitation of natural resources can lead to ecological collapse. -The pursuit of monumental projects (e.g., obsession in competing to build the biggest statues on Easter Island, symbolic of power) can contribute to environmental degradation and disaster. -Easter Island's isolated ecosystem reached its limits, leading to resource scarcity and societal decline. Our planet also has finite resources and carrying capacities. Recognizing these limits is crucial to avoid exploitation of planet resources. -Competition and conflict over dwindling resources exacerbated societal breakdown on Easter Island, leading to hunger and violence. -Contact with Western colonizers brought new diseases to Easter Island, contributing to diseases and epidemic. Easter Island's history serves as a microcosm of broader planetary issues, offering a cautionary tale about the consequences of unsustainable practices and the failure to adapt to environmental limits. We must learn from history and adopt sustainable business practice to prevent the tragic outcomes experienced by the Easter Island civilization and foster a more sustainable and equitable future for mankind. Thank you Catherine for your generous and care-full engagement with "Planetary Justice: Stories and studies of action, resistance and solidarity" (ping Michele Lobo and Laura Bedford). From the review: "Planetary Justice presents a collective call to action and a compelling set of possibilities for materializing justice in response to multi-scale climate and ecological breakdown. [...] Interweaving and building on theories of ecological, climate, environmental and multispecies justice, the editors resist enshrining a singular theory of justice, making space instead to ‘bring multiple vocabularies of climate crisis, planetary collapse, activism, solidarity and justice into productive relation, in frictive encounters’ (p. 7). This approach, informed by Shohat’s (2001) plurilogue model, and Tuck and Yang’s (2018) ethic of incommensurability, allows for pluri-logical relations and learning to emerge between the chapters, which speak to, and at times, rub up against one another. Many chapters are collectively written, with authors laying open the ongoing dialogues informing their ideas and practices. An essential element for many authors is learning with the more-than-human, what Aleryk Fricker describes in Chapter 9 as learning in solidarity with Country."
It was an honour to review "Planetary Justice: Stories and studies of action, resistance and solidarity" edited by Michele Lobo, Eve Mayes and Laura Bedford, for Social and Cultural Geography. The book is available open access online (https://lnkd.in/eh7Uvfax) and is a uniquely action-oriented, thought-provoking and earth-embedded collection of action scholarship. How did the creation of globalized scientific discourses interact with the way states in the Pacific redefined national pasts and futures? My article “Oceanic Knowledge and National Space-Time in Pacific History” explores the uses of historical knowledge and environmental science in the construction of national pasts and futures in the Pacific since the 19th century. From Darwin’s observations on the temporality coral reef growth to native Hawaiian responses to evolution theory and geological arguments about space and future directions of the Japanese nation, my paper puts places and processes into a conversation that are rarely connected in the history of global science. The paper concludes with a reflection on present-day Tuvaluan efforts to curate future memories of a homeland likely to be flooded within few decades––underlining that the meanings of scientifically construed futures are ultimately positional and they inform how nation states redefine their claims over space and time.
