As the UN begins the arduous task of thinking about the future, here is a piece from 1996 on the futures of the UN. This later became part of the Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems focused on World Futures and Planetary Transformations. While dated, the core ideas remain relevant ie eligibility for membership (why only nation-states), the need to transform the SC, and the challenge of laws within nation, and chaos outside. It was published in the first issue of the Journal of Futures Studies. The piece was commissioned by Futuresco, a project of UNESCO. Thanks to Kuo-Hua Chen for accepting it in the journal. ttps://https://lnkd.in/gyyihKWC

It will always be #Denali. As a Western and mountain historian, at least this is good to see American mountains once again in the center of the public imagination. My dissertation, "Landmark Mountains" tells the story of how iconic mountains in the West came were imagined by the public and how they came to represent the nation's imperial and industrial ambitions. If nothing else, this is a important time to be a critically thinking historian of empire, mountains, science, and the American West.

It's hard to avoid militarist expressions like "call to arms", "bring up the big guns", "shot(s) over the bows", "never again" or agressive or contaminated or emasculated words like "cut bait or fish", "whistling in the wind", etc when the objective is to shake "leaders" out of their comfort zones and take calls for "accelerated action along transformational/ transformative/ transformed pathways seriously. "enough is enough". Can global citizens explore the possibility of convening something like the IFCCC - to lead and guide an inter-generational, informed, well advised, evidence-based based dialogue over the next 3 months, so that instead of hearing the same patter, the United nations General Assembly will receive a forward looking 25 (NOT 15 year Strategy, Action Plan and targets based on essential steps to prevent repetition of another 1929 crash and 20 years of conflict to bring us back to our senses.

On this #WorldScienceDay for Peace and Development, members of the Club of Rome reflect on science's pivotal role in fostering a sustainable and peaceful world. As we stand at the crossroads of the Anthropocene - an era where human activity profoundly impacts the planet's ecosystems - we recognise that the challenges of our time demand more than conventional solutions. Conflicts today are increasingly fuelled by environmental degradation, climate change, and the relentless depletion of resources. These issues are not isolated; they are interconnected threads that, when woven together, form a complex tapestry of global unrest. Traditional military responses and short-term political settlements no longer suffice. We must look beyond the immediate and address the root causes that jeopardise both ecological integrity and human security. This collection of essays ‘Enduring Peace in the Anthropocene’, brings together diverse voices from our membership, each offering unique insights into the deep-seated and intertwined origins of contemporary conflicts. The authors challenge readers to reconsider what peace means in an age where humanity's footprint touches every corner of the Earth. Read this publication to explore these ideas further.
