Fascinating to talk with the Disney research engineers who built this robot, especially after seeing it during our family spring break to Disney a few months earlier. Couple take aways: 1) This team truly has their dream job and love what they do. The passion, knowledge and expertise were clear. 2) They design their robots to be adaptive to the environment around them (perceiving, learning and trying to solve a situation to overcome it). They don't operate in structured environments like most robots. 3) Unlike most robots you see today, they have the very difficult challenge of factoring in human emotions. This is both "perception" (reading the people around them), but also how they act or communicate emotions back. The goal is to create a connection. The vast majority of robots don't have that challenge; they simply work to complete a task. ....exciting things coming in the future at Disney.
