Kelp Blue named Finalist in prestigious XPRIZE Carbon Removal $100 Million Competition… We are over the moon! 🩵💙🩵
Kelp Blue, founded in 2020 in The Netherlands by CEO Daniel Hooft and CCO Caroline Slootweg, is an innovative #seaweed company that seeks to restore marine biodiversity and promote #carbonsequestration to support a healthier ocean ecosystem. This is done out of our primary locations by our amazing people in Luderitz, Namibia as well as Alaska, USA and New Zealand.
The exciting news just hit the wires that Kelp Blue is named one of 20 finalists by the #XPRIZECarbonRemoval Competition, backed by #ElonMusk and the #MuskFoundation! This four-year global competition is designed to combat climate change by rebalancing Earth's carbon cycle.
1,300 innovators and teams around the globe have been working hard since the start of the competition in 2021 to develop new ideas and solutions that pull carbon dioxide removal directly from the atmosphere or oceans and sequester it durably and sustainably. Out of these 1300 teams, the jury selected 20 finalists to compete in the last stage…. And we are one of them! congrats to all Kelpies of the Kelp Blue team!
The winner will be announced on Earth Day, April 2025 and will take home a grand prize of an amazing 50 million dollars while the runners-up will split $30 million. The XPRIZE FOUNDATION already awarded $20 million in 2022 to student teams and 15 “milestone” winners.
As Peter H. Diamandis Founder and Executive Chairman of XPRIZE says ‘The day before something is truly a breakthrough, it is a crazy idea’. The Kelp Blue team is thrilled as a more than exciting year is ahead of us #GettingtoGigatonne during which we will accelerate on the execution of our ‘crazy idea’ strategy: developing innovative and sustainable solutions based on the cultivation of giant kelp.

Here’s a new instalment in our “30 Seconds” series, and this one is special—it reveals our "secret sauce" for transforming conventional extensive grazing operations into more intensive, productive, sustainable regenerative grazing. You might be surprised to find that all it takes are electric fences, a modular water distribution system, and a bit of meticulous planning.

The Antwerp North Heat Network provides Boortmalt with sustainable energy by repurposing industrial residual heat from our thermal processing activities.
This reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 80,000 tons annually—equivalent to the emissions of 25,000 households.
An exceptional feature of this network is that it is the first 'open access' network in Belgium. Any company in the port that is a heat producer and/or wants to source heat is welcome to connect!
A big thanks to Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Boortmalt, Fluvius, Woonhaven Antwerpen & Vlaamse overheid for their key role in establishing this climate-friendly heating network.

Indaver generates a lot of excess heat through the incineration of industrial waste. 🔥 In our port, we have found an innovative way to ensure this valuable energy is not lost.
Through a network of pipelines, Indaver shares this heat with Boortmalt, which uses it in its malting process. And it doesn’t stop there: the cooled water is sent back to Indaver for reuse.
This is a great example of how industrial collaboration can contribute to a more sustainable future. ♻️
