What good management looks like? As I have recently completed my PG Dip in Strategic Leadership and Management and CMgr MCMI accreditation. With the ultimate aim of starting my MBA (Top-Up) with Plymouth University next April. I have been looking at top-level managers and how they conduct themselves around their employees, how do they leverage the best to ensure maximum performance and ultimately success. This often leads to me thinking about the interactions between leadership and management, and more importantly what does good management look like. Over the October break, my family and I drove down from Khobar (Saudi Arabia) to Abu Dhabi to stay at a Marriott Bonvoy hotel. The General Manager is the driving force for this approach and determines how it is used. From the concierge staff meeting guests to the bar staff around the Hotel grounds - the General Manager sets the tone from the top. I didn’t actually see the General Manager, but is that a bad thing?! Do managers have to be seen to ensure the right approach is being made, or is it about trusting the employees to do their job. This Ritz Carlton is absolutely monstrous! The General Manager is clearly using some kind of management approach such as management by exception or aspects of Leader - Leader awareness/mentality. His overall vision, personality and attitude creates a motivated, confident and effective team. The impact of his leadership style is shown by the team - the team were always smling, attentive and proactive. Outstanding leadership has a positive effect downstream. It can: ✅ Boost motivation: Great leaders make people feel inspired and energised, leading to better work. (Herzberg's motivation and hygiene factors). ✅ Encourage new ideas: Good leadership makes it easier for people to share ideas and solve problems creatively. (Leader - Leader relationships). ✅ Builds trust: When leaders are strong, teams trust each other more and work better together. (MBTI and general awareness of it). ✅ Help people grow: Great leaders support their team members in learning new skills and advancing in their careers. (Servant Leadership). ✅ Create a positive work environment: Good leadership makes the workplace more enjoyable, keeping employees happy and more likely to stay. (Basic requirements of any level of management). In a world where exceptional service and reviews can set a hotel apart from the pack. This General Manager is a shining example on how trusting the team to do their jobs can have a lasting and positive outcome. I have had the pleasure of working with numerous managers throughout my career. Still, when I joined the incredible team at Amsa Hospitality, I discovered the meaning of active and efficient management. While it may sound too good to be true, I can assure you that it is not easy. After spending over a year at Amsa Hospitality, I have gained valuable experience and insights into how to work successfully with this type of management. As we say in Amsa Hospitality, "Together we make a difference." We live up to this value and believe that to truly collaborate and create, first seek to understand and connect deeply with those around you. So, it is helpful to get to know these types of managers. They are quick, accurate, and flexible managers who tackle multiple tasks simultaneously. They are innovative, flexible, and possess exceptional problem-solving skills. They never shy away from challenges and always seek solutions while maintaining their ethics and integrity. They communicate honestly and straightforwardly, expecting the same from their teammates. They protect their team in public but hold them accountable in private. Yet, to succeed with this type of leadership, you need to #unlearn some of your skills and adapt to new ones. Here are some essential points to keep in mind: 1. Don't hesitate to ask questions if you need clarification. 2. Keep meticulous records for better organization and understanding. 3. Plan before starting work, then work quickly and efficiently. 4. Please always look over your work before submitting it. 5. Communicate honestly and transparently with your manager and colleagues. 6. Be proactive and make decisions on your own. 7. Take responsibility for your mistakes and use them as a learning opportunity. 8. Be bold and ask for help when needed. 9. Follow through on your commitments. 10. Stay calm and level-headed even when things get tough. 11. Seek to understand the rationale behind tasks and decisions. 12. Respond promptly to calls and messages. 13. Take care of yourself by getting enough rest, taking breaks, and spending time with loved ones. By embracing these guidelines, you can expect to gain valuable professional experience, develop your leadership skills, and enhance your reputation. With your hard work and dedication, you will undoubtedly achieve success. As I was pursuing my master's degree in Hospitality Management, UCF introduced the Leadership and Strategy in Hospitality and Tourism Graduate Certificate, so I added these classes and pursued this as well. One of the classes is "Leading Innovation and Change in Hospitality and Tourism". This class is great at really making you think outside the box. The professor presents some questions that lead you down a path to help resolve a company's woes or assist them in rejuvenating a brand, expanding a brand, etc. You have to provide detailed responses on how to assist/consult on what is presented to you. It was quite enjoyable! I have learned quite a bit from the course and am glad that at the end of this semester will be adding another certificate to my resume. But, the key thing here is, everything about this class is the type of work I wish I was doing in real life. So now the big question is, how do I get down a path that will lead me to that type of job? I don't want to simply be a manager at one company whose ideas never get off the ground, I want to be in a position where I can truly make innovative changes for the better of the company, its employees, and the consumer. Figuring this out is now the next step down a long road ahead.

We are witnessing a profound shift in what influences consumer and employee decisions. Beyond material considerations, individuals are now looking for experiences that offer meaning, purpose, community, engagement, freedom, ecology, health, sustainability, and authenticity. This shift underscores the necessity for a new leadership approach in hospitality. This insight has driven me to focus my doctoral thesis on strategic alignment through transformational and transactional leadership. The demand for a more meaningful and impactful approach to luxury is growing. While the current model in luxury hospitality is still very (or too) transactional, it no longer meets the evolving needs of guests, employees, and stakeholders who seek deeper, more transformational experiences. My research delves into how strategic alignment through these leadership styles can reshape the luxury industry. Therefore, I am excited to announce my participation in the inaugural cohort of the Senior Executive Leadership Programme by 𝐊𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐲, guided by Jannes Sörensen, Jacob Mayne, Philippe Krenzer, and Kenichiro Yokoyama.
