I wrote a wee post a few weeks back highlighting some of the pitfalls to #digitaltransformation & implementing #MES. I wanted to expand on these topics a bit, so this week – High Up Front Costs.
The initial investment for an MES consists of hardware, software licencing and professional services. Figures can range from £200k to over well over £1m and you should expect to pay 75-90% of these costs before your MES is delivering value & savings.
Does this mean give up? Forget implementing your #smartfactory because you’ll never get the funds. Absolutely no!! But you can be smart about which platform you select and who you partner with.
Traditional MES platforms are on-prem, heavily customised & can take over 18 months to implement… That’s a lot of cash & time before you start to deliver any real value.
Here’s my top three tips to overcoming high up front costs:
Reach for the clouds. Luckily there’s an better way, and markedly cheaper, Software as a Service or #SaaS. With SaaS you greatly reduce hardware & IT infrastructure costs. Your solution is configured rather than customised saving huge amounts of professional services. But I think the number one benefit is around licencing, there isn’t any. Essentially SaaS gives you access to all software features and you use what you want, just like Spotify.
One step at a time. Breakdown your implementation into bitesized stages, or sprints. This means you can realised ROI sooner and generate value quicker, slashing your time to value. Use the operational efficiencies and savings generated to fund the next stage.
To integrate or not to integrate. Often there is a drive to connect to all PLCs, auto-assign downtime and get all the data possible, but does it mean you should? In most cases, definitely not! Removing paper and collecting data using digital, controlled forms can provide huge insight into your manufacturing. You can also make massive savings in resource costs & efficiencies without plugging into a single PC.

I don't think it's any secret that #digitaltransformation, such as implementing an #MES, can be a challenge. I know I've spoken to many a client & businesses that have experienced it first hand, usually with significant financial impact and most definitely a fear of history repeating itself.
For me, I think the biggest single challenge is #changemanagement, which often leads to poor #adoption and missed #ROI. Secondly, it's #spec, too woolly and not enough focus at the beginning leads to #scopecreep & ever increasing costs before you even get to use it!!!!
But let's say both have been addressed well, the #vision has been sold through the company and everyone is raring to go, what should you be thinking about next? What will make your implementation a #success?
Here are some of the biggest pitfalls that lead to #digitaltransformation failure -
