In today's round-up of construction and renewable energy headlines, we bring you updates on the exciting journey of Sonnedix, a solar power giant building its largest UK-based solar facility. In tandem, we're intrigued by two gifted young bricklayers trained by Keepmoat, a leading housebuilder, who are addressing the pressing issue of the construction skills gap. Also on our radar is the prediction of an alarming labour shortage in the construction industry and the impressive construction process of Ontario's first rail megaproject. Sonnedix: The Dawn of the UK's Largest Solar Installation Out of Sonnedix's robust 300MW UK portfolio, the grand Cowley Complex is taking shape. The construction of this king-sized solar facility will potentially create a hundred green jobs while simultaneously curbing CO2 emissions by a whopping 48,000 metric tonnes per year. Interestingly, the facility is estimated to generate enough renewable electricity to power 35,000 UK households. Sonnedix's remarkable activities are trailblazing the path for the UK's renewables transformation. As we at AIM observe these developments, we're immensely thrilled by the clear demonstration that renewable energy is a responsible and profitable venture. Brick by Brick - Tackling the Construction Skills Gap The construction industry has been battling a prolonged skills shortage. Coming as a breath of fresh air, two young minds have attained their Level 2 bricklaying apprenticeship from Keepmoat and are poised to infuse new life into this tradition-rich craft. The apprentices became part of the Keepmoat family back in October 2022. Their grit, perseverance, and skill add a much-needed buoyant energy to the industry. From our position at AIM, we are extremely hopeful that more young people will follow in the footsteps of these enthusiastic bricklayers and play pivotal roles in propelling the UK's construction sector forward. Recruiters Warn of Deepening Skills Shortage in Construction The labour shortage in the construction industry is projected to worsen with the plethora of large-scale construction projects lined up in the UK. The outlook is that this would create a labour marketplace equivalent to comparing a water fight to a full-fledged war over talent. At AIM, we are carefully watching how construction companies adjust their recruiting and team-building strategies to weather this storm. Ontario's First Rail Megaproject on Track Iain Thomas FCIOB, after migrating from the UK to Canada, has found himself at the helm of the most significant transit network expansion in the American continent. The £10bn Toronto GO Expansion project is hitting major milestones under his expert leadership. This mammoth project involves the participation of industries from various countries, making it a truly global endeavour. At AIM, we keenly observe this mega project's progress, not only for the insights it may provide into similar potential projects in the UK but also for its impli

Director of Engineering Services Thomas Barnette celebrated 20 years at the co-op in January. He is June’s #ManagerOfTheMonth. 𝙄𝙣 𝙖 𝙣𝙪𝙩𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙡, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙙𝙤? “We have our substation group which is responsible for daily operations, maintenance, and operations of substations. The warehousing team handles everything about warehousing, materials, inventory, etc. Distribution Design oversees the designs and layouts of our larger and commercial projects. Kayla Paschal, our project and environmental engineer, oversees environmental compliance and other project activities along with distribution design. I, myself, spend a lot of time working with large industrial companies and large projects as well as overseeing the management of all the groups I mentioned.” 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙟𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙥𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙝𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙭 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙨? “When the Engineering and Operations departments split, there was an adjustment period of getting through the transition. The warehouse also now has a manager who oversees operations and has transitioned under the engineering umbrella, all while managing lead time issues. We’ve also been keeping up with the constant growth of our system.” 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙤𝙣 𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙥𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨 𝙥𝙚𝙤𝙥𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢? “Even though all of these separate groups are working on very different tasks, we’re all working together to serve our members. The substations have to stay maintained properly to feed the lines. We need a design before we can build anything. We have to get the material in to build the designs and get things ready for the construction guys to get it done. “I don’t think a lot of people realize how vital this stuff is. We don’t want to over or under-design, so it takes a lot of work to find the right balance to get the lights on when you turn on the switch.” 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙢 𝙚𝙭𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙪𝙥𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙝𝙨? “With the whole group, I’m excited as we work towards being a unified engineering department working closely together and getting folks more involved. With Engineering and Operations being such a large group before, people were spread out. I want to bring us together to make us closer." 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙗𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙛𝙖𝙫𝙤𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙚 𝙢𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙮/ 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙘𝙤-𝙤𝙥 𝙩𝙝𝙪𝙨 𝙛𝙖𝙧? “When I started here 20 years ago, I was able to work in the field and go out to learn the bits and pieces of things like substations. I was able to build on that knowledge over the years to get where I am today. Relay, SCADA, construction, I was able to learn as many aspects of a substation as Berkeley had. As I was able to succeed in those areas, I was given more responsibility over the years.”
