As Itzik highlighted, the recent Sisense breach has critical lessons for all organizations. To recap, hackers accessed a self-hosted GitLab repository containing hardcoded AWS S3 bucket credentials. This exposed terabytes of unencrypted customer data, including secrets like API keys and tokens that could access other SaaS services (Krebs, 2024). Key takeaways: 1. Continuously scan code repos for exposed secrets. Implement automated tools to catch developer mistakes. 2. Carefully evaluate the security tradeoffs of self-hosted vs managed services. Ensure you have the resources to do it right. 3. Encrypt sensitive data at rest and store keys securely—defense in depth matters. 4. Proactively manage non-human identities. Audit access, rotate keys, and monitor for abuse. If potentially impacted, assume a breach. Immediately rotate exposed secrets and investigate your environment for signs of compromise. Don't hesitate to engage outside expertise to help.
