There's a lot to celebrate in the food supply chain! Here are some advancements that I've seen lately that leave me feeling hopeful for the future. 1️⃣ Aldi's Refrigeration Upgrade: In 2023, Aldi announced that it had completed the installation of CO2 refrigeration systems in over 2000 of its stores across Europe and the United States. This move significantly reduces the company's carbon footprint by replacing traditional HFC-based systems with more environmentally friendly options. 2️⃣ Walmart's Renewable Energy Commitment: In 2022, Walmart pledged to power its global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2035. As part of this initiative, Walmart is also upgrading its refrigeration systems to be more energy-efficient and use low-GWP refrigerants. 3️⃣ Kroger's Zero Hunger | Zero Waste Initiative: Kroger reported in 2023 that it had diverted 90% of its waste from landfills through its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste program. The initiative includes significant investments in energy-efficient refrigeration and reducing food waste in stores. 4️⃣ UNEP Cool Coalition's Cooling Action Plan: In 2023, the United Nations Environment Programme's Cool Coalition announced a global cooling action plan aiming to double the efficiency of air conditioners and refrigerators by 2030. This plan includes commitments from multiple countries and major corporations to adopt sustainable cooling technologies. 5️⃣ Target's Refrigeration and Energy Goals: Target achieved a milestone in 2022 by upgrading the refrigeration systems in over 500 stores to use hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) refrigerants, which have a much lower GWP compared to traditional refrigerants. Target also reported a 25% reduction in energy usage across its operations. 6️⃣ Rewe Group Goes Natural: In 2023, Rewe Group, one of Germany's largest supermarket chains, announced that it had transitioned all its stores to natural refrigerants, such as CO2, significantly reducing its greenhouse gas emissions. These are just a few of the major moves made in this space. What did I miss?

Last week, Green Plains celebrated the grand opening of our Clean Sugar Technology™️ facility, the world’s first, commercial-scale dry mill clean sugar production facility. Green Plains’ Tim Bauer, Vice President of Sales and Business Development, highlights the importance of advancing the bio-economy with sustainable practices. “Advancement of the bio-economy is critical in achieving the sustainability goals necessary to ensure the long-term health of the planet and people. Executing in the same way as we have always done will not be enough to make meaningful progress in the bio-revolution. We have to be smart in what we do and how we do it. This transformational progression will be one that is based on collaboration with new and existing partners in the food and bio-materials value chain. As a society we owe it to ourselves to maximize the use of renewable resources to create a permanent and positive impact on the environment. The urgency to act has never been greater.”

Green Food Processing: A Sustainable Approach to Food Production As global awareness about environmental sustainability grows, the food processing industry is increasingly adopting green practices. Green food processing aims to reduce the environmental footprint of food production while maintaining high standards of food safety and quality. Green food processing is an emerging trend in the food industry, focused on sustainability and reducing environmental impact. This approach emphasizes the use of renewable resources, minimizing waste, and reducing energy consumption. Recent developments highlight various initiatives and innovations. For instance, Kraft Heinz has partnered with Carlton Power to develop a £40 million green hydrogen project at its Wigan food processing plant, aimed at decarbonizing operations and enhancing energy efficiency . Similarly, ZOE Energy Storage has implemented advanced energy storage systems for Hehui Food in Henan, China, optimizing energy use and reducing operational costs through digital energy management. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

An estimated 14 per cent of total food produced for human consumption is lost even before it reaches consumers. Add in food waste at the consumer level, and the figure climbs to close to 30 per cent.
Global food loss has now become such an important issue that government bodies and the cold chain’s biggest players have been forced to act but is it truly enough. We're excited to share the news about Casella Family Brands' latest milestone in sustainability! 🍇🍷 Known for their iconic Yellow Tail wines, Casella has unveiled a groundbreaking multi-million-dollar solar power facility at their Yenda, NSW site. This impressive solar farm, equipped with 8,730 solar panels, generates a whopping 11.53 GWh of clean electricity annually. Not only does it power nearly one-third of the site's electricity needs, but it also offsets 7,800 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions—equivalent to powering 1,900 Aussie homes or planting a staggering 325,000 trees! This initiative reflects Casella's strong commitment to environmental stewardship. The solar facility is just the beginning of their ambitious sustainability journey. It aligns with their broader plan to cut emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Beyond its environmental impact, the solar power will fuel operations at Yenda Brewing Co. and Pressman's Cider, showcasing a holistic approach to renewable energy use in the wine and beverage industry.
