Understanding European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) Compliance: Empowering SMEs In recent years, global concerns over environmental sustainability have led to increased regulatory scrutiny, especially regarding deforestation. The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) stands as a pivotal legislative framework aimed at combating deforestation and promoting sustainable sourcing practices. While large corporations may have the resources to navigate these regulations, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) face distinct challenges and opportunities in achieving EUDR compliance. What is the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)? The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), proposed to combat deforestation associated with the production of key commodities such as soy, palm oil, beef, rubber and timber, seeks to ensure that products placed on the EU market are sourced sustainably. It requires companies to perform due diligence to identify and mitigate the risks of sourcing products linked to deforestation. Challenges for SMEs in Achieving EUDR Compliance SMEs encounter several challenges when striving to comply with EUDR: a) Complexity of Supply Chains: SMEs often operate within intricate supply chains where traceability and transparency can be difficult to achieve. b) Resource Constraints: Limited financial resources and manpower may hinder SMEs from investing in technologies and expertise required for comprehensive due diligence. c) Information Accessibility: Access to reliable information and data on suppliers' practices, especially in remote or less regulated regions, can be a significant hurdle. d) Regulatory Understanding: SMEs may struggle with interpreting and implementing the detailed requirements of EUDR due to limited legal and regulatory expertise. In conclusion, while EUDR compliance presents challenges for SMEs, proactive measures and strategic initiatives can empower them to contribute positively to environmental sustainability. By leveraging partnerships, adopting technology, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability, SMEs can navigate the complexities of EUDR while seizing opportunities for growth and differentiation in the marketplace. Compliance with EUDR is not only a regulatory requirement but also a strategic opportunity for SMEs to align with global sustainability goals and secure their place in a competitive and conscientious market. As SMEs continue to innovate and adapt, embracing EUDR compliance becomes a pathway to sustainable growth and resilience in an evolving global economy. #EUDR #sustainability #environmental #iso14001 #esg

One week after the European Commission's proposal to delay the EU Deforestation Regulation (#EUDR), I find myself still reading through various reactions from small producers, large agribusiness companies, and governments. It’s worth noting that the European Commission first signaled its intention to regulate deforestation-linked products back in 2019. Yes, 2019! Now, in 2024, operators and traders have had several years to adapt to this regulation. Furthermore, many companies already claim—through voluntary #ESG agreements or reports—that they monitor and track their supply chains. This potential postponement is undoubtedly a green light for yet another year of #deforestation. In light of this, I would like to highlight an excellent publication in which we participated, brought to you by DIASCA (Digital Integration of Agricultural Supply Chains Alliance). The report examines the technological challenges and existing solutions for compliance with the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (#LkSG), the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CSDDD). This article, published by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, explores forest monitoring solutions shaped by EUDR compliance to foster a shared understanding among stakeholders such as supply chain partners and service providers. It also offers valuable insights for regulators reviewing due diligence statements. Let’s continue the conversation on how we can leverage technology to ensure transparent and sustainable supply chains, even amidst regulatory delays. #EUDR #Sustainability #Deforestation #ESG #ForestMonitoring #SupplyChain #ClimateAction #CSRD

The new European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) will heavily impact how many African products are sourced, produced and reported on. African farmers will be expected to report on water usage, fertilizer/pesticide usage, deforestisation and how they sustain biodiversity on their lands. They will also need to report on the labour practices and their impacts on local communities. On the upside, those farmers that comply will attract premium prices and easier access to European markets. Becoming compliant with ESRS won't be a quick fix for most - it will require two or three years to embed data collection systems, change strategy as necessary, and get the sustainability reporting targeted on the prize. Ask us. Reporting is what we do. info@corporatereporting.com www.corporatereporting.com #esrs #esgframeworks #esgstandards #esgadvisory #corporatereporters

No one likes to be negatively surprised! Please check this out and make sure you are thinking about all of your impacts and while there are 8 steps listed here, the one immediately following is pre-assurance and independent third-party assurance!
Many companies may mistakenly believe the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive’s (CSRD) Chemical Pollution requirements do not apply to them. However, the new disclosures cover both the direct and indirect use, through raw materials, of chemicals and minerals. Companies must act now to get ready since chemical pollution poses an equal, if not higher, risk than other sustainability topics. Our article “CSRD’s Chemical Pollution requirements are taking companies off-guard” identifies and explores eight steps companies must take to prepare: - Build and evolve an implementation plan - Undertake CSRD-aligned sampling and measurements - Deploy experts to develop mass balance calculations - Leverage existing company- and external databases for safety data sheets - Identify and use industry-specific public data - Create a sampling and testing plan to fill in gaps - Develop calculation methodologies for chemical emissions to air, water, and soil - Create an overall data management plan with strong governance and internal controls Access it here: https://lnkd.in/gJmnTrse #CSRD #Chemicalpollution #COP16 Ramesh Narasimhan Susan Angyal, Linda-Jean Cockcroft

Important and insightful. And it's worth reinforcing that this will apply to emerging supply chains too: #batteries, #electrolysers, #sustainablefuels and many other areas where the supply chains, manufacturing techniques and recycling issues are still being figured out. ERM works a lot in these emerging areas - do get in touch if you have questions or thoughts. Sébastien Haye Tom Houghton Michael Dolman

It's time for companies to act now, as chemical pollution poses an equal, if not greater, risk than other sustainability issues. This article by ERM ‘CSRD’s Chemical Pollution Requirements Are Taking Companies Off-Guard’, explores eight crucial steps businesses must take to prepare. Linda-Jean Cockcroft, who co-authored the article, will be presenting on this topic tomorrow at the Key Regulatory Updates Europe 2024 conference in Brussels, organised by Chemical Watch news & events by Enhesa. Don’t miss her presentation on “Chemical pollutants and EU sustainability”, on how sustainability reporting, along with product stewardship and regulatory affairs, play critical roles in shaping a cleaner, more transparent future for reporting companies. #RegulatoryUpdates #KeyRegUpdatesEU24 #sustainability #chemicalindustry
