Good news, on Friday, New Zealand Herald received a response from Transport Minister Simeon Brown who is seeking advice on whether a rule needs to be changed to enable Remote Reparking ✨🛴 This popular feature provides better access for everyone, especially people with disabilities. Thanks to campaigning efforts with Awhi and the open letter from CCS Disability Action, Disability Leadership Canterbury and Access for All Otago, we have some movement on the issue. The social protection policies insufficiently factor in the additional costs of living for people with disabilities, with some Member States even withdrawing invalidity benefits to persons in paid work or able to rely on the income of others within the household. 📢 We ask the EU to use the European Semester process to promote the gathering of reliable and comparable data on the additional costs of living associated with disability, disaggregated by type of disability, as well as the individualisation of the right to disability benefits based on needs, not means. #StandForInclusiveEU

In 2020, disabled adults in England made 28% fewer trips than non-disabled adults (Department for Transport: Disability and Accessibility Statistics, England 2020). It doesn’t need to be this way. ORA is on a mission to help make travel more accessible and inclusive for wheelchair users. Are you a business that prioritises accessibility? ORA partners with businesses to help wheelchair users access their facilities and services. https://lnkd.in/egrVRhjn Image Description: A black wheelchair accessible vehicle is open with the ramp down. #DisabilityCommunity #OpenRoadAccess #DisabilityRepresentation #InclusiveDesign #Accessibility

Data from Transport NSW shows the number of disability parking permits issued under the NSW Mobility Parking Permits scheme has increased to 417,000 in March 2023 from 277,000 in March 2007. This reflects both: 🔸 the increase in the aged population continuing to drive, and 🔸 a demand for greater availability of accessible parking bays. All New South Wales Councils are required to have Disability Inclusion Action Plans which set out their strategy and implementation of accessible parking bays to address this growing demand. But how does this play out in terms of the number of accessible parking bays we can continue to build? While fines are one way to stop misuse and abuse of accessible parking bays, we can also use technology to prevent this behaviour from the outset. and to also optimise fair sharing of these bays. A 2021 study from LaTrobe University showed that funding for Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) only supported 28,000 NDIS participants, or 6% of the NDIS-eligible population. This means only 6% of disabled Australians have the right accommodations to live and thrive independently. Lack of housing doesn’t just mean individuals are restricted by who they live with or where they live – it also means they’re forced to adapt their homes to be #accessible, or worse, make do in a space that hasn’t been built to comfortably accommodate them. Our 139 Millers project provides much-needed NDIS accommodation, purpose-built for people requiring higher levels of physical support, including wheelchair users. Through thoughtful and equitable design, we’re trying to remove some of the barriers imposed on disabled Australians and create a space where they can live with comfort and ease. #inclusivedesign #blurarchitecture #melbournearchitects #melbournearchitecture #melbournedesign #inclusivearchitecture #architectlife

With nearly 20% of Australians living with a disability—and this number rising to 35% when including those with temporary disabilities—accessibility is a necessary commitment to inclusivity and fairness. Research shows that consumers who encounter access barriers or poor disability awareness, whether in a physical store or online, are likely to simply take their business elsewhere. Beyond being a legal requirement in Australia, providing good access is simply good business sense. So if you're a business owner, consider exploring The Welcome Framework. This valuable guide, developed by the government, provides actionable insights for removing barriers and creating a more inclusive environment. Can Community Safety Justify Excluding Disabled Tenants? A New High Court Ruling Sparks Debate… 🔍 The High Court has ruled that a council can lawfully exclude individuals from social housing if their disabilities contribute to anti-social behaviour. ⚖️ This landmark ruling emphasises the court's stance that community safety and maintaining suitable housing environments may outweigh the discrimination protections under the Equality Act 2010. How should ASB professionals navigate these complex waters between individual rights and community welfare? We would love to hear your thoughts and experiences with this… #UKhousing #ASB #Disability #Equalityact #socialhousing
