The National Association of Colleges and Employers says that students with internship are more likely to be male, white students who are not first generation, and students who are not recipients of Pell grants. Northern Essex Community College is working to disrupt this pattern, making internships available to all it community college students, including those in liberal arts. For those who want to learn more about the future of academic internships, the The Chronicle of Higher Education has an interesting webinar on the subject: https://lnkd.in/e_4JXNwT

There were times I wanted to quit certain positions (I did). There were times I wanted to cry (I did). The constant tag of 'what you'll do graduating from a locally tiered college', 'Wasted your 12th percentage to study here', 'Any regrets?' (None). Made some great friends. Met some brilliant people (who still use the word 'crazy' 10 times a day). Came across a variety of students. Got a lot of exposure. Juggled internships and field works here and there. Became a record holder for drinking most ORS drinks in premises. The degree comes to an end with an immense support from the professors of Department of Management and my friends (who definitely came daily for spring rolls) and to the people I met halfway. Ps: No we are not going to count the IV drips. Thankyou.

Please wish me luck in my newest endeavor! I am almost halfway through writing my new book titled "Internships in the Sport Industry: Real-World Endeavors, Competencies, and Best Practices." This work is inspired by my 15 years of guiding and mentoring University of Cincinnati Sport Administration undergraduate students with their practicum and capstone internship experiences. The book aims to benefit both students and practitioners in the sport industry.

Last week, I participated in The Chronicle of Higher Education's event, "The Future of Academic Internships," which delved into the increasing emphasis on internships for higher-education students. The discussion highlighted how colleges are reshaping their services to better connect academic experiences with career outcomes. As this evolution takes shape, what implications arise from colleges extending internship opportunities to all students? The challenges that must be addressed are important in my role on the Practicum team here at Gillings. The presentation shed light on the struggles faced by students who encounter barriers in securing paid internships, often having to compromise their preferred work settings. https://lnkd.in/eXzNKMXt

To quote our founder's comment on Daniel Levey's post below: "The avg cost of living for a single person in LA -- before rent -- is $1,337.80/mo. Avg rent for a studio apt in LA is $1622/mo & avg for a 1 BR is $2068. Let's assume $1300/mo for housing with a roommate situation -- the avg to stay alive in LA is roughly $2,650/mo. To meet this number, you need to make at minimum $16.56/hr If you're making $19/hr for a FULL-TIME role (160 hrs/mo), you're taking home $3,040/mo before taxes. Remove 15% (low) for taxes, and you're at $31k/yr, which means your net average hourly pay is actually $14.91/hr. That math ain't mathing 🤔" #PeopleOverProfit #PeopleFirst #StayinAlive #PayLivingWages #DoBetter #PayLivingWages 👉The #Impactivists

I know it’s a paid internship, but $19/hr isn’t going to cut it in LA or any other city. David Zaslav made $49.7 million in 2023.
