The UK’s stance on AI will influence and be influenced by developments in the EU and globally. #China's Comprehensive AI Law China is working on an all-encompassing AI law to centralize its previously fragmented regulatory approach. This move signals China's intent to more tightly control AI development and application, with an emphasis on government approval for high-risk AI areas. #Global Regulatory Trends Globally, regions like Africa are gearing up to introduce AI strategies, reflecting a divergence in AI governance approaches worldwide. These developments indicate a growing global discourse on AI regulation, democracy, and innovation. The Singapore Courts (SG Courts) are exploring innovative tech solutions to enhance access to justice, focusing on the potential of generative AI to assist self-represented litigants. In an article, the Honourable Justice Aedit Abdullah highlighted the importance of technology in simplifying legal processes and saving time and resources. However, he emphasized the need for stringent safeguards to ensure user safety and mitigate ethical risks. During a recent seminar at Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), experts discussed the balance between high-tech tools and maintaining a "high touch" approach to support marginalized groups. For instance, Pro Bono SG collaborates with social workers and counselors to help vulnerable individuals navigate the legal system using digital tools. While digital innovations hold great promise, the human element remains crucial, particularly in complex cases requiring empathy and creative problem-solving. As Justice Abdullah noted, the judicial system must accommodate both technological advancements and the irreplaceable value of human judgement. Here at SMU Centre for AI & Data Governance, we continue to explore how AI can be ethically integrated into legal frameworks to bridge access gaps and enhance justice for all.
