Progress on tenure security requires a reinforced, broader and better coordinated approach to change for and from within the land sector, implemented hand-in-hand with global action on economic recovery, natural resource management, climate change, biodiversity and open societies. FAO's Land Tenure Team is therefore supporting the land and water tenure nexus, through scaling up capacities for responsible governance of water tenure: https://lnkd.in/dEBcrfgV

#NowHappening: CGIAR System Board Member Shenggen Fan kicked off the conversations at the ADB Asia and the Pacific Food Security Forum 2024 by moderating the Leader’s Forum which built a shared understanding of why it is necessary to make a fundamental shift in policymaking and investment priorities towards achieving sustainable and resilient agri-food systems. Representatives from the World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the National Security Council (NSC) of The White House, among others, shared critical insights into urgent changes required for global food security challenges such as climate change and biodiversity loss. “Water, food and energy form a nexus at the heart of sustainable development.” – UN-Water. With agriculture forming the largest use of freshwater resources, water is key to food security. On #WorldFoodDay, we’re highlighting recent research led by the University of Technology Sydney to explore opportunities for integrating water and food security policy in the Pacific Islands. Over the years, major aid investments have been directed towards agriculture, leaving water behind. As a result, interconnected challenges like water scarcity and food insecurity have gone unaddressed. The Australian Water Partnership supported research analysed the agricultural and water sector plans of 11 Pacific countries and developed a systems-based water-food nexus framework for understanding nexus links. Through this framework, six policy windows are identified for initiatives to target the wicked problems of the food-water nexus that consider different socio-ecological contexts, including gender and social inclusion, and the impact of climate change. Specific recommendations range from short-term targeted actions like creating a water and food security overview of atolls in Melanesia to long-term planning required for developing capacity-building programs for climate risk management. https://lnkd.in/gpTd5VM5 Image credit- FAO

While countries in Europe and Central Asia are grappling with conflict and environmental challenges, they are well positioned to pursue the sustainable transformation of agrifood systems and have already taken steps towards achieving many of the core Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General, said Tuesday in remarks opening #ERC34. “Globally, we are facing critical times marked by food insecurity and fading prosperity,” Qu said, reiterating his advocacy for peace as a prerequisite for #FoodSecurity and the #RightToFood as a basic human right. Comprising 53 Member countries and the European Union, and spanning nine time zones from Lisbon to Vladivostok, the four-day Regional Conference is an opportunity to exchange knowledge and best practices on the most effective solutions in support of agrifood systems transformation, and to engage in discussions to identify the most suitable responses to issues such as the continuing recovery from earthquakes, flooding, the #COVID19 pandemic and the ongoing war in Ukraine, which “continues to hamper regional and global efforts to achieve the #SDGs,” the Director-General said. https://lnkd.in/dEYQtZWx

Change is possible, and #Cuba's journey proves it. Despite facing numerous challenges, Cuba has transformed its land degradation challenge into an opportunity for sustainable growth. Following devastating hurricanes in 2008, Cuba introduced policies to revive its unproductive landscapes. Embracing low-input, sustainable farming methods due to limited imports, the country shifted from high-input monoculture to organic farming with the support of the Global Environment Facility, UNDP, UN Environment Programme and FAO. This transformation isn't just about agriculture: it's about resilience. Over 15,000 hectares of land have been rejuvenated, combating desertification, and restoring degraded soil. Incomes have doubled for food producers, making Cuba's food systems more resilient and water-use efficiency up by 70% in the first years after 2008. ➡️ Learn more about the case of Cuba and the importance of investing in resilient and diverse food systems: https://lnkd.in/d9SAu-Zc #SustainableFarming #FoodSystems
