UN the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness On the International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness, we remember the wise words of International Court of Justice Judge Christopher Weeramantry in his dissenting opinion in the Case Concerning the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons. He believed that the use or threat of nuclear weapons is illegal in any circumstances whatsoever and it endangers the human environment in a manner which threatens the entirety of life on the planet. Principles like the precautionary principle and equity and justice are near and dear to us at the ISO Environmental Management committee and are reference in a number of ISO Standards. Embracing disarmament and non-proliferation is critical to protecting the rights of future generations.

via ABC News In ruling for State of Texas, the #5thCircuit agreed that what to do with the nation’s #nuclearwaste is the sort of “major question” that #Congress must speak to directly. The justices said they will review a ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that found that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission exceeded its authority under federal law in granting a license to a private company to store spent #nuclearfuel at a dump in #WestTexas for 40 years. The outcome of the case will affect plans for a similar facility in New Mexico. Political leaders in both states oppose the facilities. Republican Gov.
