In today's changing world, the search for #sustainable alternatives to industrial agricultural production is becoming a bigger priority than ever before. Amidst a #FoodMarket dominated by enclosed and industrialized operations, the traditional way of raising cattle in the southern mountains of Castilla y León has thrived in recent years, using the same tried and tested methods as their ancestors centuries ago. Raised on the open field the whole year round, the herds of the Central Mountain Range are as much part of the local ecosystem as any other wild animal, coexisting with and respecting the natural enviroment, as well as guaranteeing the production of high quality, ethical produce; a traditional and sustainable way of life that has certainly not gone unnoticed by the ever-growing number of certified ecological operators in the area. #weareharringtonblue If you want to know more about the possibilities of ecological production in the south of Castilla y León, access the complete article: https://lnkd.in/dS_Aigde For more information, do not hesitate to contact us at: info@harringtonblue.co.uk #Ecological #EcologicalProduction #SustainableAgriculture #CastillaYLeón #Salamanca #Ávila #Spain #EU #FoodIndustry Harrington Blue & Partners Susana Ecclestone Gonzalo Pereyra de Olazabal Cecilia Thon Asociación de la Industria Agroalimentaria de Ávila VITARTIS - Asociación de la Industria Alimentaria de Castilla y León SEAE (Sociedad Española de Agricultura Ecológica y Agroecología) Unión de Pequeños Agricultores y Ganaderos (UPA) ASAJA (Asociación Agraria-Jóvenes Agricultores) SAI Platform Defhesa

Farmers often do not have the cash flow to pay for expensive training and coaching. At the same time, there are very few real experts in regenerative agriculture in Europe, and as a result, their time is very valuable and expensive. To tackle this issue, Climate Farmers is partnering with various actors within the agrifood system to enable farmers to get the knowledge input they need to start their regenerative journey. One of these partners is Crédito Agrícola, an amazing co-operative bank that is serving 35% of all Portuguese farmers. We will organise a range of trainings together with them and the first one is happening next week on 18.07.2024. It is happening at Quinta de Covela, a beautiful regenerative vineyard that I had the pleasure of visiting myself a few months ago. They are doing amazing work in regenerating their local ecosystem. We have three spots left, so if you know Portuguese viticulturists, please tag them below or send them the sign-up link that I leave in the comments. If you know other organisations that could be interested in supporting farmers in their network in the transition to regenerative agriculture, then I would love to hear from you. We need free quality trainings like this all over Europe and it is great that more and more organisations are stepping up to their responsibility. #knowledgeiskey #systemschange #regenerativeagriculture

Algarve, located in the extreme south of Portugal, has become an increasingly warm and dry region for the last couple of years. Recently I heard this statement from Taimur Malik, when I was listening to the Regenerative Agriculture Podcast by John Kempf, that caught my attention: “Nature always overcomes whatever reductive approach you take.” We must understand, respect, and work hand by hand with the ecosystems in which we operate. Last October we seeded roughly 12 hectares with 5 different cover crop mixtures with a number of plant families within the same mixture varying between 3 and 5. We are updating practices hoping to have a more effective rainwater use, decrease the soil temperature and water evaporation during the warm and dry season, decrease the loss of soil due to erosion, improve our soil structure, biology, nutrient cycling, and so forth… If we’ll be able to stabilize even a small percentage of this plant residue into humus (what might be the most important single determinant in agriculture profitability), so that polysaccharides are pulled out of the carbonaceous material instead of going back into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide and polypeptides are drawn out of the protein instead of escaping as nitrogen, that will be an achievement. We deeply believe that if we make those conditions a little less harsh for our grape vines, they will return with better grapes. We will keep paying close attention to our soil indicators. 🌍 Join us on February 5th for an eye-opening event on #Organic and #Sustainable agriculture and reporting guidelines! 🌱 I’m excited to share that the paper I co-authored with Pietro Galgani from True Price, commissioned by the Robin Food Coalition, will be presented at this event, where we’ll be discussing how organic farming can be better represented and measured in the face of European reporting guidelines like the CSRD. While organic farming is often hailed as a key solution to our agriculture and food system crises - excelling in areas like climate, biodiversity, soil health, water quality, animal welfare, and human health- the current guidelines focus narrowly on CO2 emissions per kilogram of product. This approach disregards many benefits of organic farming, such as soil carbon storage and broader environmental impacts. Understanding these nuances and effectively communicating them is no small task. That’s why the Robin Food Coalition, in collaboration with Triodos Bank/Foundation, the True Price Foundation and coalition partners, has taken up the challenge to scientifically evaluate these reporting standards and explore better ways to engage with customers and consumers. 🎉 We’re excited to invite you to the launch of our research findings on Wednesday, February 5th, at the Antropia Conference Center! This event is a must-attend for anyone passionate about sustainable agriculture, corporate responsibility, and the future of food systems. Let’s shine a light on what truly matters. 📍 Save the date, and join us for an afternoon of inspiration, insights, and impact! Much More Than Protection! Our team in Spain recently wrapped up three productive days at the Fruit Attraction fair in Madrid. With a booth bustling with visitors, customers, and partners, FMC Spain showcased how innovative technologies can drive horticultural productivity and quality — all while remaining sustainable and profitable. The Mucho más que Protección (Much More Than Protection) strategy highlights FMC's commitment through three key pillars: 🌿 Innovative and sustainable synthetics, such as the newly launched Benevia® insecticide, which was presented at the fair. 🌿 A comprehensive range of biosolutions, including the microbial biostimulant Accudo® XTS, our latest biological offering in Spain. 🌿 Cutting-edge digital tools, like Arc® farm intelligence, to enhance decision-making in the field. New solutions like these allow us to work towards real sustainability in horticulture! #MasQueProteccion #integratedpestmanagement #sustainableagriculture

‘Don’t be afraid of time’ and ‘sustainability is the necessary fertilizer to plants’ were some of the statements made by our participants when discussing the future of floriculture with Koppert. The fishbowl set up proved again a dynamic setting for our discussion, many thanks to Mattijs Bodegom for your inspired guidance and Peter Maes for your wise words and encouragements. At Klasmann-Deilmann Benelux B.V., Fons van Nierop created more awareness around the complexities of finding alternatives for peat. The challenge is great and solutions multifold, it will take time and effort to go forward the coming years and create a new, balanced situation in which the floricultural sector can flourish. When comparing family companies Koppert and Klasmann today, it’s easy to conclude that our journey to sustainability in horticulture is long and bumpy and while the belief in a 100% sustainable sector is there, it will take a lot to get there. It’s always great to see the energy, dedication and conviction of both suppliers and our participants taking on these challenges in not only the Netherlands but also in the US, Canada, Brazil, China, Spain, Colombia, Mexico, Poland and Kenya, because in the end, as was said multiple times during the day, they create well being and happiness and that should never be underestimated. #futureofflowers
