In our subject area, industrial reality is our ”lab” in both research and teaching. During the last two days we --Susanne Ollila and Árni Halldórsson -- had the chance to present our Action Lab at Vinnova’s “Nätverks- och policykonferens AIL och utbildningsamverkan”. The Action Lab connects the dots – generations of learners (researchers, students, professionals) in situated and experimental learning. We “lab” for managerial and organisational experimentation before scaling-up. We already use Action Lab in one of our courses in Service Management, together with our Carolin Behrens and a fantastic support and engagement from external partners, both private and public organisations. (The photo to the right is from a previous event). A big thanks to Vinnova for funding the project and Anna-Carin Ramsten and colleagues for giving us the opportunity to present this to peers and other stakeholders. Great to connect and re-connect some dots – to learn from others and meet old and new colleagues. Now we take the Action Lab to the next level 😊 Chalmers University of Technology Chalmers Production Area of Advance Chalmers Department of Technology Management and Economics #nyttiggörande #chalmers #chalmerstme #arbetsintegreratlärande #actionlearning #universityindustrycollaboration #knowledgecreation #collectiveintelligence #actionlab #ActionLabChalmers

This spring, we did an interesting experiment within the "Transdisciplinary Approaches for System Innovations” course we run at KTH Royal Institute of Technology: a master's student Sigrid Brydolf closely followed project groups during the course to get insights about #groupdynamics in the context of sustainability problem-solving. This unusual setup for a master thesis worked out pretty well and led to very interesting findings! ✨ For teachers, the possibilities to observe what is happening in project groups are usually quite limited and we often work based on rather weak signals we can spot in the time and space available for interactions in a classroom. This makes the study made by Sigrid particularly useful for the teacher team and will help us in developing #facilitation approaches to support work in project groups and make it an even more valuable learning experience for our students. If you are involved in #projectbased courses or deal with #projectgroups in other contexts, do check out Sigrid's master thesis - it is now available online on the Diva portal 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dXSiHb6d Congratulations to Sigrid on completing the thesis!👏 For me, it was a pleasure to collaborate with her and supervise her work along the way! Furthermore, Sigrid wrote a short article based on her study for our "Meaningful collaborations for systems transformations" series on Medium - read it here 👉 https://lnkd.in/dbhjSQqv

How can we as Fontys University of Applied Sciences, as Research Group Business Innovation and as #researchers create societal impact? We invest in solving wicked problems by involving students and collaborating with schools, universities, companies, and citizens. Defining what impact means is crucial and we are searching for a common understanding. For this reason the conference one of our researchers visited (Dr. Sonja Floto-Stammen) brought many insights: What an inspiring conference "Onderzoek & Impact" hosted by Nationaal Regieorgaan Praktijkgericht Onderzoek SIA and Vereniging Hogescholen. The program featured sessions on stimulating, measuring, and showcasing impact through practice-oriented (applied) research. Highlights included: ⚠️Discussions on the visible and measurable impacts of research (show what you do!). 👍🏻A keynote by Kees Klomp on shifting from head to heart. 🫵🏻Practical case studies demonstrating real-world impact. 🌟Emphasis on the need for diverse impact metrics. 👉🏻Calls for integrating new educational models, promoting mutual learning, and prioritizing urgent, collaborative change. #PracticeOrientedResearch #Impact #OnderzoekEnImpact #HigherEducation #AppliedResearch #SustainableLiving #Innovation #EducationalChange #MutualLearning #PostGrowth #ValueOverMoney #FontysResearchGroup

First meeting of the heads of the departments of industrial engineering and management (IEM) of the Nordic Five Tech universities at Aalto TUTA - Aalto University, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management yesterday. Great to meet and discuss with my colleagues Joakim Björkdahl from Chalmers University of Technology, Marielle Christiansen from Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Cali Nuur and Mats Engwall from KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Mette Wier from DTU - Technical University of Denmark. Very interesting to see how they do things in other universities. We do face a lot of similar challenges and opportunities in our universities, though the practices in different universities also vary quite a bit. And the focus areas of our respective departments also differ somewhat. This was a great start for collaboration. This time we focused very much on getting to know each other and our practices. We talked a little bit about more concrete collaboration opportunities around research, teaching and entrepreneurship. In any case, there's opportunities for more Nordic collaboration, and tighter Nordic networks are also going to be increasingly important given the current geopolitical situation. We were also joined by our IEM emeritus professor Eero Eloranta, who came to talk with us about the history of our field in the Nordics (he has recently published an IEM history book). The picture below is from after a long day, after some of us had already left. We're all quite busy, but we all agreed that this day was time well spent. Nordic Five Tech is a strategic alliance of the five leading technical universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The foundation of collaboration between the universities are shared Nordic values and excellence in research, teaching and innovation&entrepreneurship. #aaltotuta #iem #nordiccollaboration #nordicvalues

Please join us for our final Transdisciplinary Research Conversations (TD Convos) of 2024! Our topic: Developing an Evidence-Informed Research Impact Practice TD Convos reimagines the traditional approach to academic seminars. We open our doors to our community so that we can have collective conversations, cross boundaries, and make connections. For our December showcase there will be an opening keynote by Catherine McElhone (Research Impact Facilitator at UTS), presentation of impact practice tools by Dr Hossai Gul and demonstrative presentations by the 6 award winners of the Research Translation, Implementation, and Impact program at UTS. In this workshop-style seminar, we’ll dive into evidence-informed tools for research impact, showcasing examples from live projects across six different disciplines. Participants will have the chance to apply these tools in a fast-paced, hands-on learning experience. After workshop, we will carry on conversations and connections at the Loft Bar (UTS) from 4:30 onwards. October marks a significant milestone in the history of education with the founding of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1861. Established in Cambridge, Massachusetts, MIT has since become a beacon of innovation and excellence in science, engineering, and technology education worldwide. The institution was founded by William Barton Rogers, a distinguished natural scientist, who envisioned a new kind of independent educational institution relevant to an increasingly industrialized America. MIT was chartered on April 10, 1861, but it was in October of that same year when the first classes commenced, beginning a legacy of groundbreaking research and technological advancements. The institute's founding came during a time of significant social and economic change, and its mission was to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving industrial society. The curriculum was designed to integrate teaching and research, promoting hands-on learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. Over the years, MIT has contributed immensely to various fields, including physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and architecture, to name a few. Its emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship has led to the creation of thousands of companies and countless technological advancements that have shaped the modern world. Today, as we celebrate MIT's foundation in October, we acknowledge its profound impact on the global educational landscape and its continuous role in pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and capability. MIT's commitment to solving the world's most pressing challenges remains as strong as ever, reinforcing its status as a leader in education and research. #milestonesineducationhistory #educationhistory #InnovativeLegacy #PioneeringResearch #IndustrialImpact
