However, the creators of Devin state they went a step further, developing a more advanced solution. The announcement caused excitement in the software development community. Nevertheless, as with any AI project by a small company, it should be approached with caution. According to Cognition Labs, Devin can plan and execute complex engineering tasks. It has access to standard developer tools like the shell, code editor, and browser, all within a secure computing environment. Additionally, Devin can collaborate with the user, reporting on its progress in real-time and accepting feedback, making it a partner for engineers. What Devin can do as an AI software engineer? 🔸 Learn how to use unfamiliar technologies, 🔸 Autonomously find and fix bugs in codebases, 🔸 Build and deploy apps end-to-end, 🔸 Train and fine-tune its own AI models, 🔸 Address bugs and feature requests in open-source repositories, 🔸 Contribute to mature production repositories. The company assessed Devin's performance using SWE-bench, which is a benchmark that presents real-world GitHub issues from open-source projects like Django and sci-kit-learn. American firm Cognition has unveiled a pioneering AI-based tool named Devin, heralded as the "world's first fully autonomous AI software developer." Defined by Cognition as an autonomous agent capable of addressing engineering tasks through its integrated shell, code editor, and web browser, Devin represents a significant leap forward in AI-driven development. In a demonstration shared on its YouTube channel, Cognition showcased Devin's capability to create and deploy applications, conduct codebase error detection and correction, and even fine-tune AI models. Equipped with an AI-based shell, code editor, and a distinct web browser, Devin utilizes the browser to access API documentation, learning how to connect to each API—a critical function allowing multiple computer programs to communicate. When encountering errors, Devin autonomously inserts debug print statements into the main code within the code editor interface and re-executes the code, showcasing its problem-solving proficiency. Devin's reliability is underscored by its performance on the SWE-Bench coding test, a modern coding benchmark requiring AI to solve GitHub problems identified in real open-source projects. Devin successfully resolved 13.86% of issues independently, significantly outperforming the previous state-of-the-art model's 1.96% (without assistance) and 4.80% (with assistance). For context, GPT-4 AI model managed to solve 1.74% of problems during testing on the platform, according to Business Standard, while the best prior result was achieved by Anthropic's AI model Claude 2, solving 4.80% of identified problems. This breakthrough differentiates Devin from existing AI developer tools such as Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, primarily a code completion tool. While GitHub Copilot offers programming assistance by converting prompts into executable codes and completing code snippets across various programming languages, it lacks Devin's capability to autonomously complete codes without human intervention or assistance.
