Our polyurethanes for footwear are meltable. The meltable nature of our footwear systems is a characteristic typically associated with our thermoplastic materials like Elastollan® (TPU) and Infinergy® (E-TPU). However, we are proud to introduce a breakthrough in our Elastopan® PU systems for footwear, where this property is now applicable: meltable PU by BASF! The concept of meltable PU is another essential step forward towards a circular future of footwear: Bottom units, upper parts or even complete shoes made of polyurethanes are ready for mechanical recycling concepts. Even combinations of TPU and PU can be considered for recycling without disassembly. If you are interested in learning more about circular footwear concepts in the PU world, be sure to join BASF at #Simac2024 in Milan. Make the Move. Footwear Sustainability: Embracing Recycling to Tread Lightly on Earth Each year, millions of shoes—sneakers, boots, sandals, and slippers—end up in landfills. Despite a 16.5% drop in footwear production in a country like Spain in 2023 compared to the previous year, a staggering 83 million pairs were still produced. Alarmingly, only 5% of these were recycled, according to data from the Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries (FICE). This represents a significant challenge, one that is becoming more urgent due to legal mandates.

We're making strides in sustainability. By supporting the footwear industry with innovative low-carbon and circular solutions, we enhance product sustainability without compromising on performance. This approach not only reduces our dependence on fossil feedstocks but also breathes new life into plastic waste. One example is Dow's partnership with Porto Indonesia Sejahtera, an Indonesian consumer brand known for its recovery footwear. As the first in Asia to use Dow’s post-consumer recycled (PCR) polyethylene resins into their products, Porto Indonesia Sejahtera has incorporated REVOLOOP™ resins in their premium sandals and flip flops, as part of their vision to drive circular footwear solutions. One million pairs of safety footwear end their life as landfill every year. Let that number sink in for a moment. Many of the complex components of safety footwear aren’t biodegradable, so there is a good chance to encounter a 100-year old somewhere. Now let that number sink in. Do we really want to hand down this problem, for the next generations to clean up our mess? We believe we should do better. With the Circular Footwear Alliance, we don’t let a single pair end up in the landfill. We make sure they are collected, dismantled and recycled at the highest level so that these resources do not go to waste. The Future of Footwear: Sustainability and Portuguese Production Take Center Stage The footwear industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by growing concerns about sustainability and shifting global production dynamics. At a recent panel event hosted by APICCAPS, industry experts gathered to discuss the forces shaping the future of footwear. Portuguese production is emerging as a key player in the global footwear market, with the country's manufacturers leveraging their expertise in high-quality production to meet the demands of fashion brands. Meanwhile, sustainability regulation is becoming an increasingly important factor, with the European Union's proposed Eco-Design Directive set to impose new standards on the industry. The panel discussion highlighted the need for footwear companies to adapt to these changing circumstances, investing in sustainable materials, production methods, and supply chain transparency. As consumers become increasingly environmentally conscious, brands that prioritize sustainability are likely to gain a competitive edge in the market. #SustainableFashion #PortugueseFootwear #FootwearIndustry #EcoDesign #Fashion #GreenBusiness #EthicalFashion #SupplyChain #IndustryTrends https://lnkd.in/d8_MeCtg
