What If We Could Cure Blindness? 👁️💡The Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh is part of a groundbreaking project aiming to make functional whole eye transplants a reality. José-Alain Sahel, MD, Ophthalmology Chair at the University of Pittsburgh and Endowed Chair of the Eye & Ear Foundation of Pittsburgh will co-lead the project with primary investigator Jeffrey Goldberg, MD, PhD, Chair of Ophthalmology at the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford. "By combining the deep knowledge about ophthalmology, tissue preservation and regeneration, immunology, and surgery of world-class scientists, we are well-positioned to set the foundational steps toward restoring vision using a whole eye transplant," Dr. Sahel said. Researchers have validated the clinical relevance of a recently proposed optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) staging system for outer retinal morphologic changes. The study shows that baseline morphologic RRD staging correlates with postoperative visual acuity outcomes, according to the results of the retrospective cohort study published in Ophthalmology Retina (American Academy of Ophthalmology).
