In our upcoming game, SnapCats: Ascendance of the Rift, we have integrated a unique blend of modern and vintage art styles to enhance the player’s experience. The game’s visual direction draws heavily from hand-drawn sketch styles that evoke a sense of nostalgia while maintaining a futuristic, sci-fi aesthetic. By implementing vintage art techniques—such as pencil sketching, detailed line work, and a focus on raw, expressive forms—we aim to create a timeless, immersive atmosphere.
Our art style emphasizes hand-crafted detail, with each environment, character, and object feeling authentically worn, rugged, and battle-scarred. This choice creates a world that feels lived-in and realistic, allowing players to experience both the grandeur of futuristic technology and the haunting remnants of an apocalyptic past. This fusion of styles offers a fresh visual experience that not only reflects the story but also makes the game visually memorable.
By blending these traditional techniques with modern design principles, we are ensuring that Ascendance of the Rift offers both a cutting-edge and timeless aesthetic, providing an immersive atmosphere that players can truly lose themselves in. This vintage art approach is more than just a visual choice—it’s a defining element of our game’s identity.
Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to develop this ambitious project!

When building isometric or fixed-perspective games, we employ a neat technique during the concept phase to emulate (and roleplay) the player's viewpoint.
This involves overlaying a dark gradient layer with a central rectangular cutout over the concept art to represent the player's screen.
We position the character in the middle of this frame and move the layer around the environment, simulating the player's movement.
It's been a wildly effective design technique for early-stage brainstorming among the team.
You can see a few examples (concept + video) of how we do this here: https://lnkd.in/eUpstSTh#conceptart#gamedesign#creativeprocess#designtechniques#leveldesign
Keep your pitch deck concise. Focus on clarity and brevity to make an impact. As one of the 20th Century's greatest designers, Abram Games, famously said,
"Maximum meaning, minimum means."
